Slavic? : ✅
Behind the iron curtain? : ✅

Close enough

[–] huppakee@feddit.nl 12 points 2 weeks ago

The east-west divide by the iron curtain is also more recent being the capital of the not-holy not-roman not-an-empire so

Geez, it's like you go and get absorbed into one ostensibly socialist authoritarian eurasian empire and it's all anyone can remember.

What do they say about fucking goats again?

"Be careful about which end you approach from"? 😛

Czechoslovakia was never part of the USSR

[–] artifex@piefed.social 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Neither was Poland, but both were very much in the "2nd sphere", effectively under the control of the USSR. My family had close friends in Czechoslovakia who flat-out were not allowed to travel to the US to visit their family at the time, for example.

[–] TheEighthDoctor@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

Oh yeah it was very much under USSR control don't get me wrong

[–] j_overgrens@feddit.nl 2 points 2 weeks ago

It was part of the empire though.

It bothers me that William Fontaine de La Tour Dauterive, bilingual in English and Louisiana French, isn’t France

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Boomhauer speaks French too, if memory serves

[–] PaulBunyan@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It’s the Louisiana French I mentioned

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Boomhauer speaks Canadian French, I believe; Bill Dauterive speaks Cajun French.

This scene sets up Cotton's best line. I guess this version would be:

"Hey, Cotton, this is _____, he's from Eastern Europe."

"No he ain't! He's, from Prague, aintcha Mr. ______!"

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago

Cotton's a horrible racist, but at least he knows what ethnicity the people he hates are.

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why isn't Dale Russia? He's clearly fluent in it.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

You, too, can be fluent in Russian if you eat enough of Putin's personal library.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

As a German speaker, A-plus on the dale gribble characterization

[–] jpablo68@infosec.pub 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Something like this happened to me when I went to Spain, I'm from Mexico and I kept trying to explain to spaniards how we're in north america and not south america.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I guess the US is South America to Canada. Except for Alaska.

[–] jpablo68@infosec.pub 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Or to people in Detroit, Canada is South America.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

More East America.

[–] Fleur_@aussie.zone -2 points 2 weeks ago

Eastern Europe is just the bits occupied by the Soviet union post ww2
