Fortunately for Glukhovsky, he is not actually in Russia, and was sentenced in absentia. His current whereabouts are unknown.

A sizable amount of the English reading population comes from countries where convictions come after trials, and trials have the accused present. It's not unreasonable to assume that he might have been in custody. Also they didn't mention he is still hiding out of the country until the last paragraph.

yeah but it's Russia...there's nothing normal or sane in Russia.

According to their oligarch-based testing methods, gravity still works normally at least.

Yeah. Note the "his whereabouts are unknown". That's for his own security, even though he's not in russia.
