Single player RTS games. Mega-lo-mania on the Amiga/Mega Drive was my introduction, and Command & Conquer really got me hooked.
Sadly the genre is a shadow of its former self now, and what’s left is mostly multiplayer focused. I miss the days of good long campaigns with slightly campy FMV cutscenes.
There are some excellent C&C mods available now. Here's two:
Combined Arms is a Red Alert mod that brings in GDI and Nod and does a lot of interesting things. Campaigns for all factions as they deal with the upheaval that is a second war being overlayed over the war they were fighting.
Mental Omega is a Red Alert 2 mod that reimagines the expansion pack, Yuri's Revenge. Heavy faction overhauls and a full campaign. There's also a second mod that goes on top of it that remakes the entire Red Alert 2 campaign using the improvements of Mental Omega. It tells the same story, but all of the missions have been recreated with more complex and varied design.
Mental Omega is brilliant, if a bit difficult!
Need to give Mega-Lo-Mania a proper go. Only really got a few levels in.
Dune 2 and Populous got more time from me!
Likewise, though I think I found megalomania really fun as well. Would be interesting to try them on an emulator to see how they feel now. Or real hardware, of course.
Probably Sonic 1 on the Master System.
One of the first computer games I ever played at my friend’s house, and came bundled with my own Master System for Christmas 1991.

From when I was a proper little kid maybe the Dizzy games, and a game called CJ in the USA.
From a bit older I get really nostalgic for Ultima Online. That game was great and there’ll never be another experience like that. No separation for PVP, PVE, role players or the like, everyone just crammed in together.
I met the two brothers that made dizzy. They told me the that the IP is still owned by their old company and that's why they could never make more. It was one of my favourite games as a kid, played on the Amstrad CPC and it was sad to know there were never more due to this.
They released Wonderland Dizzy a few years ago. Worth a play

Mostly any games on a Commodore Vic-20 or C64
I do recall having an old TV console, ie Ping pong, etc, but, I wouldn't say that was as nostalgic as the later cassette games... the screaching sounds whilst loading (for minutes)... ahhh...
What were your favourite C64/Vic20 games? Was the Vic20 that popular in the UK in the 80s?
Not the commenter you asked but... I played Rapier Punch on the Vic20 and I can't remember anything else. I never knew anyone else with one so maybe not that popular?

Vic-20 was the lower cost option of the C64, so yeah, loads around. Of course you always wanted the C64... then the C128 and then the Amiga...
4 games come to mind immediately (all on PC, win3.11, and at times DOS when they wouldn't work on win), Great memories.

Loved Warcraft I & II. Bit of replay value with the map editor on 2 as well. Plus playing through all the sound files with the built-in player
ExciteBike, but we probably played Mario 1, 2 & 3 more.
I have Mario 1 & 3 still working on my old Wii from just after college, also Dr Mario, Sonic 2 and a crappy Tetris clone. I’ve been meaning to get an emulator up and running since my old NES hasn’t been able to boot a game in probably 10 years.

I don't think I'd play it now, but I greatly enjoyed it back then and now it's interesting to think of it later and understand how various limitations made it's production and gameplay more streamlined and accessible.
