You've got my axe! ๐ธ
Not professional, and I haven't played in years, but I did play trumpet in band for about a decade!
Oh sick. Are you local to Melbourne by chance? I need some trumpet sometimes
I'm about as far away from Melbourne as possible, on Earth, in fact! Best of luck finding some trumpets, though.
I have submitted to knives and scuba communities here even though they're small. Fortunately, I still get responses. So I urge you guys to post in your empty communities or create your own
I'm a musician with dreams of opening a donations based label and covering a different genre every album. Currently releasing a mixtape where each song is a different genre.
Most recent release was on July 4th to protest all the horseshit going on in America: https://youtu.be/RsS5mFz-WgA
Also have a video explaining my dream a bit more here: https://youtu.be/1SROCLSPY9U
I used to play saxophone, clarinet and flute for years, but then I moved to Australia and I didn't bring any of them with me. They're expensive here, too, so I can't bring myself to buy another..
Though now I have an Irish low whistle, I haven't had a chance to really get in to it because of changing jobs, moving houses, etc etc. The lack of buttons is challenging.
I admit, though, I have a longing to just get back in to a community band again just to be surrounded by music again.
You in Melbourne? What kind of music do you like listening to?
Sure am. I listen to a lot of different genres and it really depends on my mood and the sound of the song. I can't pinpoint any specific type of music, even my partner is confused. Now I've just been listening to 80s and 90s Elton John, Shania Twain, etc for nostalgia.. But I'll listen to pop, rock, metal, heavy metal, Irish trad, folk, calm instrumental music, occasional j-pop, jazz,..
Man, I wish.
I can't sing. I can't play any instrument. I have no sense of timing (I can't always even clap along in time). If I ever do end up being part of a band it's going to be as their manager since I'm now too old to be a roadie. But I wish I could, I dunno, play guitar enough to jam or be a part of an totally average local band.
If you can't play music but want to play WITH music, I'd recommend getting a groovebox like the Novation Circuit (original or Circuit Tracks). It gives you 2 synthesizers and 4 drum parts in one small, battery-powered box, with a sensible note/pattern sequencer. It's limited, but there are a lot of resources online for using it, and it's cheap if you buy used. Great fun to sit on the couch and make tunes.
There are also groovebox apps for iOS (like Grooverider GR-16) that do the same and sound great for less money.
What I'm saying is: music creation is more accessible than ever these days, so never tell yourself you can't do it.
Nice, perhaps I'll have a play! Thanks!
I make music and have released them on streaming platforms. Iโm subscribed to most of the music, music production, and music genre communities in the fediverse.
I sing and play folk music on the guitar and early music on lute and recorder (my favorite size is the tenor).
What sort of folk music do you play? I love Scottish and Irish folk and primarily play guitar, but I've never really figured out how to properly incorporate it into that kind of music
Mostly American stuff, the way I like to play solo is with fingerpicking chord melodies. I'll usually try to find a way to play the tune with my open chords and then mix in some other voicings to spice it up.
When playing early dance music I prefer to strum diads though; I'm usually in the middle or low register in a dance pit, filling out the sound for the melody instruments like vielle or citole.
Dyads makes sense actually, the closest I've ever gotten to finding a sound I like for it is when I'm playing my guitar that I keep in open C tuning. Vielles and citoles would be a rare sight over my way, but violins take on the exact same role. Thanks for the advice!
I played the Kazoo for several years but I could never tune it properly.
Bassist and vocalist here! Production and mixing too. Really love synths too.
Massive rush fan, if its not obvious

I play the Penny Whistle!
Penny whistle gang unite. Go find a Lemmy community and follow it. Heck you could find the guitar community and take it over with their paltry numbers.
I play the guitar, but mostly I just learn tricky songs and I try to play them. I would happily read about music though.
Why talk about it when you could bee practicing or playing. most discussions feel like people who don't like it enough to practice and so theyeare not good and in turn are 'blind leading blind'
i play mandolin, at an okay. I dabble in many other things.
Because I'm in bed next to my sleeping wife and I wanna support the community and maybe reply to help someone on their musical journey.
I'm already subbed to a few comms but I'd take recommendations on what I should be following
I play the cello but I havent practiced in 3 months
Have you followed a cello community on Lenny? Maybe it'll keep the spark alive for you enough to get back to the strings. I wanted to play cello as a kid because of that little half plastic ball that goes on the end of the metal stick so you don't scratch the ground. Saw one that looked like a galaxy and was hooked, but they only had violins left at my school. so, you are essentially living my dream.
