Why are the people in power always biased towards the most brain dead decisions? Does this not sound wrong to any of them?

[–] a4ng3l@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Risks of the AI going amok set aside there’s something appealing in not risking human lifes during conflicts. Karmically or economically wise. Also you remove the limitations of human bodies -suddenly your airframe can give 100% of its capabilities without turning the pilot in a milkshake.

[–] darthelmet@lemmy.world 30 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Removing humans from your side of the war lowers the cost of going to war and allows for even more centralized power. It’s a lot easier to do morally bankrupt acts if you don’t need to convinced a group of human soldiers to do it. Clearly you can anyway a lot of the time, but going for the robots is a lot cheaper/less risky.

It’s pretty obvious why powerful people would want this and why it would be terrible for the rest of us even without worrying about a hypothetical sky net future.

It's a lot easier to murder with robots, but they're going to need new models if they want to replace all the raping, pillaging, bureaucratic corruption, oppression, etc...

There’s plenty of training material for those around I understand…

Military intelligence is to intelligence, what military music is to music.

[–] Rodeo@lemmy.ca 1 points 11 months ago

It only comes in one variety and it's not very good?

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 7 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

It only sounds problematic to someone who cares about the lives of ordinary people. But that's not the sort of person who dedicates their whole life to increasing their own wealth and power by any means necessary. Those are the people that get to make the decisions.

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Ah, my mistake.

[–] gregorum@lemm.ee 39 points 11 months ago (6 children)

wasn't there a movie about this being a bad thing? i'm pretty sure there was...

[–] Sabata11792@kbin.social 29 points 11 months ago (1 children)

An entire category of movies saying "don't do this exact course of actions ever"? Sounds like a good starting guide!

[–] blackluster117@possumpat.io 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

But the autonomous fighter plane learned about 2000s Alt-Rock and made jokes! It's a good guy!

[–] Sabata11792@kbin.social 5 points 11 months ago

New light novel just dropped-My Ai Girlfriend is a Thermal Nuclear Bomb that Wants the Launch Codes.

[–] qwertyqwertyqwerty@lemmy.one 3 points 11 months ago

There's been at least a couple.

[–] drwho@beehaw.org 3 points 11 months ago

That movie inspired a lot of folks back home to go into this very line of work. They completely took the wrong lesson from it.

[–] LoamImprovement@beehaw.org 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Man, someday you're gonna have a blast watching the Terminator movies for the first time. Maybe even today!

[–] gregorum@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago
[–] skeezix@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Terminator would not have been as great as it is without that soundtrack.

[–] lemillionsocks@beehaw.org 1 points 11 months ago

Well according to the third movie judgment day is inevitable, talk to the hand. So maybe they just figured they might as well be the ones to do it.

[–] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 28 points 11 months ago (1 children)

they should just buy a tesla

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml 2 points 11 months ago

Yes, until now a Tesla killed more people.

[–] ObstreperousCanadian@lemmy.ca 23 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I look forward to them being equipped with the ability to refuel by consuming biomass, self replicating, and having unbreakable encryption so they can't be stopped!

[–] drcobaltjedi@programming.dev 22 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Oh great, Skynet is actually the US millitary.

I'm sorry we're like this.

[–] drwho@beehaw.org 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Who else would have the money to build Skynet?

[–] gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml 1 points 11 months ago

It's not about the money, it's about principles.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It always was the US military. Go watch Terminator 3.

[–] drcobaltjedi@programming.dev 2 points 11 months ago

It's been awhile since I've seen any of the movies.

[–] waspentalive@lemmy.one 16 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Do you want a Butlerian Jihad? Cuz this is how you get a Butlerian Jihad!

[–] DarkenLM@kbin.social 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I think the Butlerian Jihad can't do shit against Judgment Day.

[–] waspentalive@lemmy.one 1 points 11 months ago

Why not both?

[–] DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com 8 points 11 months ago

Paging James Cameron...

Is the US preparing for a war with China? Cuz it certainly sounds like it.

Quote from the article:

The Pentagon is working toward deploying swarms of thousands of AI-enabled drones, according to a notice published earlier this year.

In a speech in August, US Deputy Secretary of Defense, Kathleen Hicks, said technology like AI-controlled drone swarms would enable the US to offset China's People's Liberation Army's (PLA) numerical advantage in weapons and people.

"We'll counter the PLA's mass with mass of our own, but ours will be harder to plan for, harder to hit, harder to beat," she said, reported Reuters.

[–] drwho@beehaw.org 4 points 11 months ago

It seems like they're preparing for a war with anyone and everyone. It's not like the US has the greatest reputation across the planet, and there's no shortage of dust-ups around the world that might get pointed in the direction of North America at some point.

[–] gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The US wants its ass kicked, lol.

[–] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 months ago

Spare the rod

China has been militarizing and between the gender gap, the soon decline in population, and recent global attitudes towards them shifting , theyre going to be in for a world of economic hurt. A large population of unattached young men with poor economic outcomes doesnt bode well for peace in that region.

Likewise the US policy of "surely embracing capitalism will lead to a liberal democracy" gave way to mild hostility towards china when it didnt happen. Especially with a president for 4 years who kept saying those quiet things other presidents didnt outright say because they knew it would be poking the bear for no reason.

God help us all if this actually happens because it would lead to a world war centered on Asia and china, and I hope that what will happen with the age gap and decline in china will mirror more japan, but we do live in uncertain times.

[–] sxan@midwest.social 4 points 11 months ago

Thanos: it was... inevitable.

[–] lemillionsocks@beehaw.org 3 points 11 months ago (2 children)

This is absolutely horrifying. Humans are already bad enough at identifying targets and minimizing collateral damage and civilian casualties.

How does one program a drone that can identify targets independently, while also not easy being fooled by someone disguised as a noncombatant and child? I guess in theory the drones could be more expendable than manned targets and therefore have an even more strict policy on firing on potential noncombatants(even if that is easily exploited) but I get the feeling they wont do that.

[–] DarkenLM@kbin.social 2 points 11 months ago

Easy: murder everyone. Which will probably be the course of action this Skynet will take.

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml 1 points 11 months ago

I think they are able to make it work when they manage to insert "If he wears a turban and a beard, shoot." They have already shown that the marines often did not use other criteria either, Reuthers knows about this.
