Hi Lemmy,

I'd love to make a list/index of good websites for movie / TV reviews and recommendations with all of your help.

I will keep updating the post and add categories

Most of the things that I watch are US content or a derivative and I feel like I'm missing out. On more curated sites like rogerebert.com there are a is a lot of non-US content which I really like.

Are there more sites like Rogerebert? Is there something like an english Cahiers du Cinema? Is there a rotten tomatoes for Asian or European movies?

Maybe the mods can eventually make a nicer post and pin it.

Sometimes I just use Wikipedia to get a lost of yearly movie releases. No reviews but a nice detail of a simple list.

Also don't forget IMDB they have reviews, summaries and show other websites review scales.

I do that too sometimes, also on IMDb when I f.I. search for "comedies with a 7-9 rating between 1970 and 1990" - found a lot of films like that.

That's precisely why I love curated platforms though, because I don't have to go "though the weeds".

Love this post. I'll pin it for more visibility. And once you get a good list, I can add to the sidebar. Oh, I'd also put each link on a new line, just to make it easier to read. It looks one long link in each section, currently. Or like you said, I can make a post later and organize it if you want too.

My contributions:

Dan Murrell on YouTube. I find I'm in agreement with his reviews most of the time.

The Filmcast podcast is the only one I listen to regularly these days.

Hi, thanks for the pin : ) They were in new lines, it just formatted to this when I posted. I made double new lines now.

[–] canthidium@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Oh yeah, it's the Lemmy formatting. if you put 2 spaces or a backslash at the end it will add a line break and it won't be double spaced, if you want to tighten it up a bit. Also you can insert a horizontal line by typing at least 3 dashes if that's what you were going for with the row of pound signs. Looks like this:

Thanks for updating, looks great!

Hey - just wanted to say that I started listening to the Filmcast on a regular basis because of your recommendation - thanks : )

[–] canthidium@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Awesome! They have great chemistry and I love that they don't always agree on movies. Gives a good variety of opinions. Jeff Cannata also does a podcast called DLC, as well as a interesting science podcast called We Have Concerns, if you're into those at all.

I love that too - thanks for the other recommendations, I'll look / listen in it

Perhaps the L.A. Times or Variety or Hollywood Reporter could be added?

I just want to plug criterion. They have essays on all their films that are really well done, often with the directors themselves. Also the criterion channel is amazing!

I always keep one streaming service subscribed so as not to be a total scrub, and I have a hard time imagining going back to Netflix or whatever.

They're usually denser, often foreign films that require and reward undivided attention, but worth it imo. They often come with commentaries and interviews with the directors. Martin Scorsese for example has a bunch of content up on it.

Some teasers of curated collections they have

Oh definitely - I'll add it

I rate movies on Letterboxd and it seems pretty popular. There's also ratings on TMDB (The Movie DataBase) but there aren't as many reviews.

I've found a tonne of great films ranging from high brow to sleaze to the weird with fun co hosts https://soundcloud.com/the-important-cinema-club
