Boycott US

Overview:

The community dedicated to boycotting the US until they stop fascism, restore full democracy and start following international law.

Americans have a moral obligation to resist Donald Trump and project 2025 at every turn.

America is a flawed democracy currently being ruled by oligarchs. Stop the backslide! Dont let America become the next Hungary.

America needs to challenge the court rulings of citizens united v. fec and shelby county v. holder, protect the media, implement independent district drawing, and the single transferable vote so they don't end up having people stay home in life-changing elections because they cannot vote for their favourite candidate.

"It's really all about letting the Canadians know that we miss them, that we don't think of them as a target market, we think of them as neighbors, friends, family. We share a history, we share so much more than just a border," Friede said

Fuck you.

"Sure, there's that little detail about electing a racist cunt that wants to disappear inmigrants by sending them to prisons abroad without due process just because they are not pure blood murricans but that shouldn't discourage them from coming! Ice is only able to arrest a portion of them!"

Very much this.

Montana voted for Trump 3 fucking times.

Any pain they are feeling is the result of their own actions.

Haha lying dumbass is obviously lying.

There's no way to ask this without it coming off as a roast, so I'm just going to lean into it: What the fuck do Canadian tourists do in Montana? Look at mountains? Why, did Canada run out?

[–] golden_zealot@lemmy.ml 13 points 2 days ago

Montana borders both Alberta and Saskatchewan. A lot of people on road trips to other destinations in the US travel through there as a result, and may schedule stops at the national parks Montana has for example.

I do expect the hospitality sector there is being affected more than the tourism sector itself.

I remember, it had to be early 2000’s, my family and I were down in Southern Saskatchewan. I do not remember where it was but we were close enough to pick up some US FM radio station during the day so we were fairly close to the boarder. Any who we almost went decided to go across the boarder but my parents thought about it and decided not to cross the boarder because we did not have insurance. Now that I am cleverly disguised as a mature adult I would not make a stop in the US even if I had insurance because I could be arrested and thrown in to a detention centre just because I am not a US citizen and I am proudly out as Trans.

Life goals:

I will live in Montana. And I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle". And drive from state to state.

Global Affairs Canada said it's aware of roughly 55 Canadians in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, though it said that the numbers can fluctuate.

This needs to be blared across all across the news. God forbid the ice fascists hurt them.

[–] blindsight@beehaw.org 10 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I'm surprised it's only 33%. Even ignoring the 51st state threats of annexation, ICE is arbitrarily holding Canadians in inhumane conditions with absolutely no due process or judicial oversight. People in ICE detention centres, right now, are being given aluminum foil for blankets to sleep on concrete floors, while being given literally moldy food. A (Caucasian) Canadian died in ICE detention already this year, likely from being denied access to essential medications (anti-seizure meds, iirc?)

Who the hell are the 67% that are still continuing to travel to the US? Are they clueless, or do they assume they'll be fine since they're white?

In May 60-some% of these trips were day trips. so they aren't there for long.

There are dual citizens (using passport of the respective country to enter), residents of border towns with NEXUS cards (or cross so often they are recognizable to officers) that commute, use services or attend events across the border, which probably makes up a significant chunk of the remaining trips.

could be people who made vacation plans in year/years in advance, are only just the last leg of vacations until they disappear, we probably wont see the effects, til maybe december from the usa side.

[–] Sunshine@piefed.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Too many people are engaging in high amounts of apathy.

[–] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

So many people think they are an exception and that they are one of the "good ones" who won't have an issue.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 days ago

Good :).

A majority of them clearly don't want Canadians if they voted in that orange turd.

[–] kepix@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

33 is not that much considering all the deportation and locking ups

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)
