I mean, it makes perfect sense. All other major parties are either doing nothing about or actively worsening the plight of the working class, so when you have someone saying "I'll help you and here's how insert thing that agrees with their preconceived notions regarding race, gender, etc" they'll flock to them. Everything else becomes secondary.
With that caveat that those preconceived notions were instilled by decades of right wing press that has propped up that same self serving troglodyte.

The Taliban were also a relatively lightly armed group of bandits who were not stopped by the US-equipped Afghan army at all because the people of Afghanistan actually wanted the Taliban back. That's why I made the connection to your polling remark.
