Ackman has been a vocal critic of Harvard’s recently resigned president, Claudine Gay, over allegations of plagiarism and her handling of antisemitism on campus.

Honestly neither woman really plagiarised to the extent that a major punishment is warranted.

But this Ackman guy what a loser.

How do you be a billionaire but still post on Twitter (ol musky aside)?

You can literally do anything on the planet and that’s what you do?

It’s hard to argue that the world wouldn’t be a better place if we dropped these hedge fund assholes into the nearest active volcano.

are we really pretending to care about plagarism this much? is it really worth our time to see if someone copy pasted something rather than pointlessly reword it and lose fidelity?

"...four paragraphs in my 330-page PhD dissertation: ‘Material-based Design Computation’......I omitted quotation marks for certain work that I used....For each of the four paragraphs in question, I properly credited the original source’s author(s) with references at the end of each of the subject paragraphs, and in the detailed bibliography end pages of the dissertation." The examples posted by Business Insider showed Oxman’s explanation as true in three examples of the alleged plagiarism.

However, it also showed an example in which she appeared to paraphrase an author without a parenthetical citation or quotes and another passage in which she allegedly inaccurately attributed a passage from the Royal Society of London paper to two different sources.

oh my god who the hell cares

The point is that Bill Ackman made a big public whiny piss and moan about Claudine Gay's plagiarism, which as it turns out is pretty much identical to the type of plagiarism his wife has now been found guilty of performing.

It's all very dumb, but now it's funny because he's made a valid case why his own wife should immediately be fired and her PhD dissertation put under review.

[–] girlfreddy@lemmy.ca 40 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Yup. He wants forgiveness for his wife 'cause she's human and makes mistakes, yet is still roasting Gay over the bonfire.

Fuck him and his wife.

While Ackman didn’t back down from his scrutiny of Gay — going so far as to say she should not remain as a faculty member due to her “serious plagiarism issues” — he defended his wife Thursday in a post on X, saying “part of what makes her human is that she makes mistakes.”

[–] stopthatgirl7@kbin.social 31 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

what makes her human

His wife gets to be human and make mistakes because she’s his wife and not Black. Gay fits neither of these criteria and thus…

[–] girlfreddy@lemmy.ca 16 points 8 months ago

Racists don't know any other way. 🙄

[–] BreadstickNinja@lemmy.world 29 points 8 months ago

Wow, it's almost as though his problem with Claudine Gay had nothing to do with plagiarism.

[–] thrawn@lemmy.world 13 points 8 months ago

The previous one was because Dr. Gay was the President of Harvard, a school. And really it should only have mattered to people related to Harvard, most people don’t actually give a shit about academic honesty.

It matters here cause throwing stones in glass houses and all. Well deserved and pretty funny, even if you don’t care about plagiarism in general.

That was the first accusation. His wife plagiarized more.

The issues is that her billionares husband used the exact same "weak" plagiarizism that the previous harvard dean had done in 1997 as a pretext to have her fired for not stopping student protests about the gazan genocide on campus. He attacked her over and over and over and was instrumental in her ouster for things his very own wife did in her work.

Its a story about hypocrisy and how plagiarism, sometimes minute cases, is being used to discredit otherwise excellent professionals.

In the larger scope of things, yes plagiarism will become more important as AI companies try to take everyone elses work and get paid for it.

It is already a rampant issue on youtube, as the incentives there almost always line up with stealing as much intersting work of someone else as possible to keep your content mill going. Hbomberguy did an exhaustive and excellent video tlaking about the specific harm that plagiarism causes, which is generally that it prevents people doing innovative or valuable work from getting credit, which may stop them from making more good work in the future.

[–] zik@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Still, this doesn't meet a reasonable bar of plagiarism. I get the hypocrisy but two wrongs don't make a right and this should never have been taken seriously.

I am so sick of hearing "Just let [______] do whatever they want always?! Why do you want to inconvenience the asshole ruling cla$$)?

Like, the burden is on you and why WOULDNT I want to inconvenience the ruling class?!

[–] quindraco@lemm.ee -1 points 8 months ago

Really? Defending plagiarism is accruing upvotes? Lemmy is a wild place.

[–] sagrotan@lemmy.world 17 points 8 months ago

Oh they wanna open THAT barrel? The list is loooong

[–] Erasmus@lemmy.world 13 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Something something glass houses…

[–] IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

This comment is gold, I’m stealing it.

[–] doublejay1999@lemmy.world 11 points 8 months ago

This is so awesome and also hilarious.

If I was cllaudine gay I’d be doing exactly the same thing.

[–] BustinJiber@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago

All this people standing on stages with their ear mounted microphones is so cool I can't even... /s

Billionaire wanker using some pretty mild plagiarism for attacking a person for political reasons: "she should not remain as a faculty member due to her 'serious plagiarism issues'"

Same billionaire wanker when the exact same kind of problem is uncovered in his wife's dissertation: “part of what makes her human is that she makes mistakes.”

One rule for thee another for me.

[–] YtA4QCam2A9j7EfTgHrH@infosec.pub 3 points 8 months ago

Also, his wife is white so a little plagiarism is ok.

[–] white_shotgun@aussie.zone 1 points 8 months ago

Vot is dis background

[–] Facebones@reddthat.com 1 points 8 months ago

Duh, every accusation is a confession for the right.
