I understand they may be in circumstances which prevent them from using the ideal tools for building trenches/digging, but ideally, would they be using a pickaxe instead of an axe?

Hahaha I didn't see the video initially just read the text, that was funny. Honestly I am clueless, somebody will come and explain that is better because x or y if it's frozen or they didn't have them or something but to me that looks very stupid and funny.

It interests me that Napoleon's troops and Ukrainian troops could meetup today and share the complaint of digging trenches in cold weather. 200 years and frozen dirt is still a problem.
