Anon didn't read the books.

Samwise goes to the undying lands after having a family, watching them become adults and a stint as the mayor of hobbiton.

I respect the movies, but the further into the story they got the more incomprehensible and arbitrary the deviations from the book became.

if you know the story how Harvey Weinstein wanted to cut down Studio Ghibli out of pure pettiness as a power play, you understand how these garbage edits happen

[–] 520@kbin.social 8 points 7 months ago

That bad they had to cut down very lengthy books into very long movies but movies all the same

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 13 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, it's like they skimmed a bit.

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 3 points 7 months ago

We’ve had skimmed lord of the rings movies yes, but what about semi-skimmed lord of the rings movies?

Istr there being a story that sir Ian was always carrying the book around and coming up to the director pointing out ways how the shots could be made more correct.

The LOTR movie was full of absolute legends, from sir Ian suggesting lore accurate shots, to Christopher Lee showing Peter Jackson how people truly die when stabbed in the lungs.

You can't forget the sacrifice of Viggo's foot committing suicide to make the scene more meaningful.

also Gandalf was the one who insisted he go with Frodo, after his dubious claims against 'dropping eaves'.

so why would Frodo be telling Gandalf about the person who Gandalf insisted on going with him?

[–] morrowind@lemmy.ml 46 points 7 months ago

Yeah the movies did frodo dirty. He does not abandon his only friend at the borders of the black land

[–] palebluethought@lemmy.world 27 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

He also doesn't ever abandon Sam or even think about taking Smeagols word over his. I get why the story structure of the movie demanded some kind of wrinkle at that point, but that's the one deviation from the books I never liked at all

[–] JJROKCZ@lemmy.world 24 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Yea but Sam wasn’t experiencing hardcore PTSD from the combo of carrying the ring and getting stabbed by a morgul blade

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 19 points 7 months ago

I always thought that’s what Sam understood. The ring was fucking with Frodo and what Frodo was doing wasn’t normal so he stepped up. It’s like when your friend is tripping balls and paranoid but you’re still there to help.

Samwise is the hero of the books Anon.
