When you advance so much in mathematics that pi starts to mean probability, and you run out of greek letters and had to use Hebrew ones.

[–] Sotuanduso@lemm.ee 3 points 10 months ago

Of course the day after reading this, I encounter it for the first time, in my ML class.

Honestly maths gets easier with letters because there is a lot less maths in it, at least in the traditional sense. Lot harder to make a numerical mistake.

a lot less maths

There's more maths, but less arithmetic.

[–] oce@jlai.lu 2 points 10 months ago

Ah, who knew quantum field theory was easier than arithmetic.

[–] UraniumBlazer@lemm.ee 2 points 10 months ago (3 children)

But u can use a calculator to bypass numerical mistakes

[–] Wanderer@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago

Not the ones I make.

[–] kevincox@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago

Calculators are still very error prone. It is very easy to press the wrong button or miss a digit without noticing.

[–] Ludrol@szmer.info 1 points 10 months ago

You just need better calculator to operate on greek letters like Mathematica

I can speak Greek and I'm still terrified when math speaks Greek

Italy tried to invade Greece during WW2. That's how the Italian army got its reputation for being I-tier.

Tensile stress x heat conductivity x the angle alpha x shear stress (or a time constant) x the rate of change of the angle alpha.

There are:

  • ×
  • ·
  • *

and you still chose x.

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I didn't do "*" cause I'm on a phone and I didn't want to mess with accidentally italicizing my whole sentence. Everything else but "x" is a special character that I can't get to in a short time.

You can do \* to prevent it from italicizing stuff. Also, if you're using Android, there's an app called Unexpected Keyboard that makes every reasonably-useful key reachable in a few taps.
