Sep 1, 2023 - Sample September: Florentine Fern

  • Brush: Dogclaration Grooming Purple Hybrid 28mm B7 Knot
  • Razor: Blackland Razors Blackbird Ti
  • Blade: Gillette 7 O’Clock Super Stainless (Green) [1]
  • Lather: Catie's Bubbles - Florentine Fern - Soap
  • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Logbook - Aftershave
  • Fragrance: Armaf Perfume - Club de Nuit Intense Man - Eau de Toilette

Starting off Sample September with Florentine Fern for #fougerefriday. Also using a new B7 Dogclaration hybrid brush. After AA, it felt great returning to the TiBird, and it rewarded me with a BBS shave. Used the Armaf Aventus dupe this morning because my wife loves it.

Now that we are past LG and AA this year, I'm going to do better about posting on Lemmy as well. Hopefully, the Boost for Lemmy app will be released soon for Android, and I can use Lemmy with a familiar mobile interface.

The lather was effortless greatness; just like meeting an old friend. And now I remember what the scent reminds me of: Spezi - the best soda ever.

I somehow lost my hand both at stropping and shaving with a straight: I had to concentrate a lot, and it's not just doing your thing quasi automatically. The shave was not particularly close.

And I confirm: Semogue Galahad Horse >> Zenith Horse XS

Have a good evening!

2 passes. Face lather. Good shave.

A quick shave after a long drive today. This was my first use of this new (to me) razor. I'll use the same setup tomorrow to give everything a fair shake.

to give everything a fair shake.

How much of a fair shake does 70th need? 😅

That razor looks fantastic. Is it NOS or just very well kept/refurbished?

Using 70^th^ is a problem. When returned from my trip yesterday, I had a new soap at my doorstep (Elysian Soap's Olympus). I took a huff of the tub and immediately thought, "I should sell this". Later that day, I wondered if maybe 70^th^ is spoiling me so I took a huff of my tub of Seaforth! Black Watch and had the same reaction. I am going to need to wean myself off 70^th^ after this month.

The razor was refurbished by The Shave Authority (in CH, btw). It is well used but was also maintained well. Swedish steel hardened in the mid 60's HRC. Amazing edge with a very different feel from your Fili.

[–] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh no! Not Black Watch! 😱 I'll be more careful going forward when using this schedule 1 soap recreationally😅

The Shave Authority (in CH, btw)

CH as in Cofœderatio Helvetica? I couldn't find much googling this. Do you have a link?

[–] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

CH as in Cofœderatio Helvetica?

Yes. The Shave Authority is an Etsy shop (TheShaveAuthority on Etsy). He offers high-end, harder to find, mostly NOS or lightly restored, Japanese razors and shaving-related items. I'm helping him move to a honing process that includes a microscope similar to mine. His sharpening work is already excellent, btw.

[–] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

His offering looks great! Pricy, but great

Definitely pricey. Certain razors by Tanifuji, Iwasaki, or Yukio are very hard to find. This is collector stuff. At the end of the day, they shave hair like Gold Dollars do -- with a much, much better experience :)

Sample Straightember

  • Brush: Zenith B21 (XL chrome-plated copper handle, 28 mm boar with 50 mm loft)
  • Razor: Filarmónica 14 Doble Temple (8/8, extra full hollow, red scales)
  • Lather: Fitjar Islands – Fjellheim
  • Post Shave: Lea – Classic Splash

A Fili 14 with red scales, a sample tub of Fitjar Island Fjellheim cream, a Zenith B21 boar brush, and a bottle of Lea splash

I've made up this Sample Straightember: One Straight, Thirty Samples theme, and my plan was to use this new-to-me Fili 14, but I'm expecting a Böker Abalone to arrive in about a week and I already know that I'll be breaking the "one straight" rule when it arrives 😊

This Fili is in a well-used, but good condition. It's clear that the previous owner took good care of it, and it took a sharp edge with just a few strokes on the hone. The blade feels large after a month of Weckoning, but as excessive as the 14 form factor may seem, they are just the most comfortable shavers (I've tried this, @gcgallant's Fili 14, and my Friodur 14, and they are all fantastic).

Fjellheim is a pleasant Juniper scent, and I had a fantastic shave with. I'm looking forward to trying a new sample with this same razor again tomorrow.

  • Brush: Semogue 1305
  • Razor: Muhle R89
  • Blade: Personna 74 (32)
  • Lather: Central Texas Soaps - Down By The River - Soap
  • Post Shave: Chatillon Lux - Delor de Treget

I'm glad for everyone else that August is over.

The Central Texas soap base has always treated me well. I own two of their soaps and I like them both. They used to advertise their soap as being "thirsty", which I tend to agree with. I appreciate when a soaper says stuff like that. It shows they know their soap well, and want people to give it what it needs... water.

I learned recently while working on the wiki that Delor de Treget was one of Shawns very first scents. Cool! Read more here.

Prep: Splash of Cool Water
Razor: Timeless - Stainless Steel .68 Open Comb
Blade: Gillette - Nacet (Marathon) (530)
Lather: Chiseled Face - Midnight Stag (White Label)
Brush: Zenith - r/wetshaving MOAR BOAR B35/508A XL (55 uses)
Post Shave: Chiseled Face - Midnight Stag (White Label)

Gear Pic :: Video

䷀ General Notes

Austere August Bonus Day for me since I started late.

This is consecutive shave num 30 with the Midnight Stag.

The slurry lather just feels so good with this brush. I just did a regular slurry work-up today and enjoyed the speed and feel of the lather.

䷀ Razor and Blade Notes

(Timeless - Stainless Steel .68 - Open Comb ::: Gillette - Nacet - M ‹530 uses›)

Same as usual for AA: First pass just a bit tuggy, second was nice, and third felt very smooth and comfy. Cutting reasonably close, for such a used blade.

Razor and Blade Performance/Comfort Rating: 2 out of 5 (Okay)

䷀ Soap Notes

(Chiseled Face - Midnight Stag - White Label)

I just love all the aspects of this scent!

Scent Strength: 6/10, nicely present during shaving.

Lather... Same for a good slurry lather: super wet, but amazingly slick on the first pass; a bit more together on the second pass; and a third pass of mature lather that felt great and performed well.

Bowl: No Bowl

䷀ Brush Notes

(Zenith - r/wetshaving MOAR BOAR B35/508A XL ‹55 uses›)

Brush and it's big patch of soft tips shone nicely as I continue with the AA setup for just two more days.

Slurry had it working gently at first, and then managing the built up lather well on the second and third passes.

During the Shave Feel:
  Cheeks: Felt blade but comfortable
  Neck: Felt blade but comfortable
After the Shave Closeness:
  Cheeks: Close Shave
Neck: Several hairs are showing some tip length (still a pretty good shave)
