At this point most americans seen finally leaving Vietnam as a win. It spawned so much media about how tiring and cruel it was, and many are as popular as Forest Gump, Apocalypse now and, even more morbid, Jacob's Ladder. That was one of the first wars that signaled americans that PTSD is a real thing and you can't just get over it.
