I love the app, but I've added a handful of accounts, and the app's handling of this is strange.

First:

Despite which account I'm logged into within liftoff, any comments I make seem to default to whichever of my accounts matches the instance of the OP. So, if I'm logged into my lemmy.ml account, and I comment on a post made by someone from lemm.ee to lemmy.world, it posts under my lemm.ee account because it matches the OP's instance.

*Edit: I think I was reading this wrong. It's not the OP's instance, but rather whichever instance it was sourced from. So, lemmy.ee /All vs lemmy.world /All. So that makes a little more sense, but it's still ignoring the account that I've logged in as.

I'm curious to see which one it uses for this post, since I'm logged in under Lemm.ee, but this is a lemmy.world community.

Second:

Browsing by All/Hot is using all of my accounts' subscriptions, rather than all of Lemmy. It's like it's expecting each account to only be subbed to its own instance's communities, which isn't how the fediverse is meant to be used. This results in a couple of weird behaviors.

The first 12 or so posts on my front page are always the pinned messages for EVERY instance in which I have an account.

I'll see most posts 6+ times because my accounts share some subscriptions... So if they're all subbed to the same lemmy.world meme community, then that floods my feed with the same meme for every account that I have added to Liftoff.

*edit 2: Maybe this was a bug, because an app restart seems to have mostly resolved the duplicates too! I'm still a little unclear about why I would choose an account on the profile screen when it auto-switches based on which instance's filter I'm using though. But now that I know that it does, I think this will work well for me!

I love the look and feel of this app, ~~but I think I'm going to have to log out of all but one account to make it usable in the meantime.~~

Testing this out right now. I have a lemmy world account logged in while viewing the post through another instance.

If you're seeing posts from multiple instances, it could be the "everything" tab. In the settings it can be disabled but should be off by default. There's a different All, Local, and Subscriptions view for each signed in account for me.

Each post says via instance.here and my guess is you're commenting with whatever account matches.

Maybe that's what it was?

I didn't turn on the Everything tab. It's still off by default. Maybe the app needed a restart after I added all of my accounts, because now I'm seeing one at a time.

Yes, I think you're right. I misread that as the OP's account rather than being "sourced" from that instance's All feed. It's still strange that the app ignores my logged in account though. I'm unclear what the point of picking an account is if it automatically changes with whichever /all feed you select anyway.

I've been thinking of it more like an inbox selector. I got tripped up by it, too. It would make sense to keep the account and feed tabs in sync.

That's a helpful way to look at it.

Yeah, this was especially confusing coming from Connect and Jerboa, where everything you do is tied to the profile you've currently selected. I don't dislike the idea of being able to hotswap instances, but if that's how it works, it would probably be helpful to have an indication of which account your comments/posts were about to be submitted under.

Why do people need more than a single account on a social site?

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 17 points 11 months ago

I do it because not every instance is federated with each other, and I want to be able to view and interact with content.

Plus, sometimes the bigger instances have been going down due to traffic, so I just hop over to a different account.

[-] jesterraiin@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Are you tracking THAT much amount of topics/thread that it warrants such an approach?

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

So, an example of one use case, I mod a community on Lemmy.world, so I need to be on my lemmy.world account to do so. Lemmy.world is sometimes unstable due to traffic, so I hop to an account on a different instance to continue browsing Lemmy.

Or another example: beehaw has some funny content, but they defederated from lemmy.world, so I have to swap accounts to see it.

[-] jesterraiin@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

...but your community is a few days old, there's hardly any content and even less comments... Surely, you don't need to have to monitor it real time 24/7, or am I missing something here? 🤨

You forget the ultimate reasoe: because we can.

I'm saying that because it looks like you're going after them for doing so as though it's a bad thing. I suspect you're just confused about the choice because it doesn't make sense to you, and you're trying to figure it out, but aren't aware that the way you're going about it comes off less than friendly

That being said, it's the same as having multiple reddit accounts, or twitter, or Facebook, or whatever.

Redundancy. Backups need backups, which could use backups.

purpose specific options (like only accessing one type of content on a given account so that it's easier to focus on a topic as needed)

enjoying the freedom of other users not knowing that it's the same person, so that you can avoid being followed around (for good or bad reasons on either side) or just escape a more "popular" account's connections connections.

For the fediverse in specific, there's also the fact that defederation exists (which OP already mentioned), so you night not be able to access all instances from one account. As an example, if I want to access beehaw, I have to have a second acccount.

And, with porn in specific on lemmy, a lot of instances expressly forbid it because of local laws, so having an account on one of the two (or both) porn focused instances is a wise choice to prevent any issues in that regard. Piracy is a similar situation, though less problematic overall.

And, again, why not? There's nothing wrong with it, there's no significant drawbacks, and it doesn't cause trouble for other people.

Now, you may or may not have any of those use cases, and that's okay. But others may/do.

Hell, I keep my author account fairly heavily isolated from almost anything else I do. That's another use case; isolating public/professional identities from casual account activities. Nobody that's interested in my books needs, or should be able, to have access to the rest of my online life. It's none of their business. Ever see any of the reports of people losing jobs over their Facebook activities under their real name? It's also very common for employers to do a quick name search nowadays in case the prospective hire is sketchy.

There's way more reasons to keep multiple accounts than there are not to. I'm just surprised that there's people that don't.

You forget the ultimate reasoe: because we can.

You can jump out of a window. And yet you don't. Your argument is invalid.

[-] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 months ago

You know, you could have just said you were trolling, would have been just as effective

[-] jesterraiin@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Provide better argument next time. And keep it brief, please. Long walls of texts concerning such trivial matters say more about the author than about the topic.

What about it? Whatever content you're consuming might be traced back to your IP/browser fingerprint...

It has nothing to do with legality. Simply, no memes and articles cluttering up the feed on the porn account, and no tits smutting up the daily driver. 🤷‍♂️
