Note this pic I'm posting stops before the 2023 event and all that has come since, so you can just mentally tack that on. Absolutely tragic. I can't imagine why they and their parents might be inclined not to trust Israel or Israeli colonizers.

Edit: Updated, higher resolution graphic, and link to source if you'd like to see it with less jpg.

100%. This is a decades old strategy.

[–] endhits@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

This is how people become radicalized. This is why Hamas exists in the first place.

Don't treat people like animals and expect them to act otherwise.

Heat is now probably present in the Sun, NASA says.

Didn't you hear? Israel sent a "credible certification" it wasn't committing war crimes to the state department. Who is now breathlessly pushing news updates saying there's no evidence Israel is committing war crimes with US weapons. That "credible certification"? A letter written by a high ranking government official.

Leahy Law is a dead letter.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 7 months ago (1 children)

It's okay we're building a port for Israel to then use to keep blocking aid.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Right? Israel straight up announced it would keep Palestinians out of the port. To secure aid that was already vetted in Cyprus. There is no reason for that unless they're planning to block delivery.

[–] BNE@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 7 months ago

It's because the port is a forward operating base and entrenches the annexation of Northern Gaza. They built a road splitting Gaza into two and are shooting anyone who approaches it. Add to that the US wants warships present to defend the oilfields it's just been liscenced by the occupation forces.

This is, and always was, about money and ethnic cleansing. Fuck israel, free Palestine.

Probably??? Really??? Probably….?? Fuck off the word is Definitely!

[–] dlatch@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

This way they can say "wir haben es nicht gewusst" when the world will question how we could possibly have let this happen.

[–] OccamsTeapot@lemmy.world 38 points 7 months ago (1 children)

While we can say with confidence that famine is a significant risk in the south and centre but not present, in the north, it is both a risk and quite possibly is present in at least some areas

I'm not a doctor or anything but based on the picture in the article alone isn't "quite possibly" really underselling it?

News: at least 20 people have already died from malnutrition

US: Hmm yeah could be a famine there, not sure. Hard to tell.

"Famine" is a technical term with quite a high threshold:

  • At least 20 per cent of the population in that particular area are facing extreme levels of hunger;

  • 30 per cent of the children in the same place are wasted, or too thin for their height; and

  • The death – or mortality – rate has doubled, from the average, surpassing two deaths per 10,000 daily for adults and four deaths per 10,000 daily for children.

You should check out the actual part of the UN responsible for declaring famines, the IPC. They use phases 1 through 5 to describe the severity of the situation. Northern Gaza is Stage 5 and Southern Gaza is Stage 4.

The definition of their phases -

Differentiation between different levels of severity of acute food insecurity, classifying units of analysis in five distinct phases: (1) Minimal/None, (2) Stressed, (3) Crisis, (4) Emergency, (5) Catastrophe/Famine.

We are at Catastrophe. Famine is not a warning designation, it is when a lot of people start dying. The warnings have been coming for months. You do not wait until the IPC says, yup it's a famine, to treat it seriously.

[–] livus@kbin.social 10 points 7 months ago

This. Humanitarian NGOs have been warning about this for months now. The crisis is happening right now.

[–] OccamsTeapot@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Thanks for the info! Didn't know about that

[–] livus@kbin.social 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Np. Love your username btw.

[–] OccamsTeapot@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Aww thanks!

[–] wahming@monyet.cc 22 points 7 months ago

Probably? Now?

[–] mlg@lemmy.world 20 points 7 months ago

But don't worry, the US has also sent 2500 (3.8 mil lbs) bombs to finish the job.

Can't have a famine if there's no people amirite

[–] pop@lemmy.ml 19 points 7 months ago

"And we helped create it.

cheers everyone."

Thank you for your service

ICJ order from yesterday sure showing off what their amazing power stands for. The "world order" everyone.

At least we now know that the Genocide verdict israel will receive in the future is worthless as well since everyone just ignores the ICJ. International Court of Jokes.

[–] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 16 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Bidens state department still not sure of the cause of the famine. But made sure to notice that it is not israel.

[–] autotldr@lemmings.world 2 points 7 months ago

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The number of trucks distributing aid in south and central Gaza had nearly reached 200 a day, an increase on a month ago, but more were needed, the state department official said.

On Friday the head of Unrwa, Philippe Lazzarini, tweeted that the ICJ’s ruling was “a stark reminder that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is man made and worsening”.

Israel has faced accusations, including from the UN’s top rights official, Volker Türk, that it is potentially committing “a war crime” by continuing to obstruct food aid to Gaza’s population of 2.3 million.

The latest comments come amid mounting frustration in the Biden administration with Israel, which is a recipient of substantial military, financial and diplomatic support from Washington.

In a statement marking Arab-American Heritage Month, Biden said: “We must pause to reflect on the pain being felt by so many in the Arab American community with the war in Gaza.

The latest famine warnings came as the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, approved new talks on a Gaza ceasefire, and heavy fighting continued in the strip including at several hospitals.

The original article contains 845 words, the summary contains 184 words. Saved 78%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

[–] PatFussy@lemm.ee 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Probably. It's not yet and hasn't been for the last 20 years that we have been saying maybe but it's closer now than ever.

[–] MeanEYE@lemmy.world 0 points 7 months ago

There's famine in New York, somewhere, probably. How easy it is to be a reporter these days?
