I don't think I've seen one of these threads in a minute, so why not? shrug-outta-hecks

Here's what I've had going on -

Completed:

Good:

Giant Robo: the Day the Earth Stood Still - Great OVA! I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys G Gundam since the first few episodes of this essentially helped Imagawa get the job as the first non-Tomino TV Gundam showrunner. From what I know, they didn't license the actual stories from the manga, so Imagawa and crew made shit up whole cloth and use characters from miscellaneous Yokoyama manga. It gives it this really manic energy when guys with random super powers and Romance of the Three Kingdoms characters are all fighting each other like a kid playing with a box of their parents old toys. Very light on actual robot fights, but the animation is gorgeous.

Getter Robo: Armageddon - More 90s super robots. I didn't like it as much as Giant Robo, but this goes pretty hard and was enjoyably edgy as fuck.

Rose of Versailles - Delightful 70s classic. It has me wanting to watch more Dezaki stuff - maybe Space Adventure Cobra will work its way in soon.

OK:

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Season 2 - Wasn't bad, but it just didn't have enough to interest me.

.hack//Sign - This was a favorite of mine back in the old days. It's good for an advertisement/prelude for the PS2 games, but I don't think I would recommend it otherwise. I also watched the Intermezzo and Unison OVAs - they're eh.

Kill La Kill - I watched this on a whim after watching Cutie Honey (1973). It's not bad, it's just not really my thing.

Musha Knight Commando: SD Gundam Scramble - Probably cool if you were like 10 in Japan in the early 90s. vivian-shrug

Bad:

Cross Ange - Please check CWs before considering this, but wow is this an interesting train wreck of a show.

Ongoing:

Legend of the Galactic Heroes - 30/110 so far. Still liking it a lot, but I'm just slowly working my way through this one. I couldn't imagine binging through it.

Movie: Inu-Oh: a fun rock opera. I reccomend for a good time.

Finished up:

The dangers in my heart: great ending, I'll likely pick up the manga. Weirded me out to find out the kids are barely 14 though.

Yubisaki to renren: super cute, nothing spectacular but lovely slice of life heart throbbing romance

Started:

Konosuba: I think ep.1 leaked because I was able to watch something. Either way, glad the fun is back, look forward to whatever they do this season.

Hibike Euphonium: I started the new season but was confused. Turns out I missee 2 movies so I'll go back and watch those.

GOATED:

Dungeon Meshi - monumental feat of imaginative worldbuilding, on par with LotR or Dune.

Ok:

Frieren- I think we've talked about this show on here enough already. It's a mixed bag.

Apothecary Diaries- It's neat. Having the plot twist be that the literal personification of patriarchy actually be a victim of patriarchy was a choice, although I'm not sure how successful of a story beat it was as presented.

Bad:

Granblue Fantasy- I started watching it because of the game, but it's literally the middest of mid shows. S1 is at least kinda interesting for having all these baroque, incredibly hard to animate over-the-top over-designed JRPG character designs, that the animators somehow heroically tried to animate beautiful fight scenes for, but the story is mid as hell and then S2 simplifies all the designs and they just straight give up on trying to tell a story, so bleh.

GBF was one of the biggest disappointments ever, it had potential, if you are at all familiar with the franchise it got some people from Final Fantasy working on the GBF game, the gacha game story wasn't even that bad once you get past the early stuff.

But the problem is GBF is a gacha game primarily, and it had a lot of fan favorite characters, its ridiculously bloated for a gacha. But imo in particular just the Eternals they're one of the best designed characters I've seen anywhere, also in terms of personality too, and also top notch VAs etc...

But you see what stupid Japanese incompetent company decides to double down on? The most bland main cast ever created. Also litealy half the appeal of the MCs in the gacha game is the fact they can transform into all these different classes and they wear all these different outfits etc but nah, not even that.

The gacha game is slave labor simulator 2014 but Cavalier, Gunslinger, Luchador, Glorybringer, Runeslayer... what could have been.

GOOD: “King of the Hill” and “Ranma 1/2”. I watched some of the dungeon cooking show, but isekai always bores me after a while, I tell you hwat.

Ep. 1 of Train to the End of the World is good. Interesting premise, fun animation, and it's got trains and yuri in it. I'm hoping it will hold up for the rest of the season.

Many people are saying this!

You can tell that dungeon food is made by a woman by the fact that female characters have more than 2 body types

[–] TheDialectic@hexbear.net 1 points 1 year ago

The female gaze is once again proven to be majority hand related.

[–] heartheartbreak@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Dungeon meshi is pretty enjoyable looking forward to the story continuing

Frieren was also pretty good although it peters off towards the end

Started metallic rouge but fell off. Conceptually it should be up my alley with a female centered cyberpunk / sailor senshi hybrid thing going on, but the plot really feels like it's gonna head towards liberalism and I'm not looking forward to it.

[–] heartheartbreak@hexbear.net 1 points 1 year ago

We need like a hexbear rec list that takes into account like how reactionary/liberal the work is etc. cuz I don't trust any anime communities to not be awful/blind about politics

Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 and the Fang of the Sun: Dougram pilot are the first anime I've watched in years. I fucking love mechs. Dougram fucks hard, I can just tell. 0079 is on and off but it's worth it for Char.

[–] Cromalin@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

oh shit you're watching dougram? i've been meaning to get to that for a while now, have fun! i saw a great video essay on it that totally sold me on it but i'm gonna save it for when i've got a LOT of free time

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My wife came at me like "ASH WE SHOULD WATCH THIS I FOUND IT" and I looked at it for two seconds and concluded: "Mecha fucks, Battletech fucks. What if they kissed?"

Was it the Pyramid Inu video essay? I was gonna post about their What Does Turn A Gundam Say About Identity Anyway? video here cause Idk, thoughts.

[–] Cromalin@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

hell yeah. i assume you know that the mechs in dougram got stolen for battletech?

yeah it was! i liked the turn a gundam essay, i'm curious about your thoughts

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Literally as soon as it came up onscreen, I started poking wifey all leo-point LOOK!!! SHADOWHAWK!!! IT'S A MOTHERFU*KING BATTLETECH REFERENCE!!!

Uh Turn A seems kinda funny but I dunno how much I'm into its character designs stylewise, they're kinda weird. Video was not enough about the protagonist which is mostly why I clicked. Maybe there's not much to note but like ?????? I'm prolly gonna watch Turn A sometime, I think I have to now.

[–] Cromalin@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

yeah lmao. battletech got sued over that, just really blatant ripoffs. but they were good designs to steal!

turn a has a unique aesthetic, the characters were designed by akiman, who did a lot of work on like, street fighter and darkstalkers and those 90s capcom games. the mecha were all done by syd mead who did all the technology in blade runner and alien and tron. it's very different from basically anything else out there. i personally love it, it's just a gorgeous show. late 90s sunrise at their best

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That shit's so rude too, the whole Unseen thing, like they got sued and then Sunrise never even bothered issuing a Dougram bluray, fuck em =)

I thought I recognised the character art from somewhere!! Did not know Syd Mead was involved though, that's rad as fuck.

Why did you give me the giant robot brainworm =)

[–] Cromalin@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i think they lost the masters? though that might be bullshit like it was for mellowlink

yeah he does great work. the mecha are so cool in turn a

i'm sorry, but they can only be satiated by spreading them to others

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I bet you they probably just didn't feel like doing a new transfer, since the DVD was made from broadcast tapes =) Maybe didn't think it was worth it, lol

rat-salute-2 I am continuing to spread the giant robot mind virus!!!

[–] Cromalin@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

yeah maybe. i bet dougram probably isn't a big seller on home video, very dry (from what i understand) 75 episode anime from 1981 that isn't part of a franchise or anything. suing battletech might be the most money it ever made them

rat-salute

[–] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i bet dougram probably isn't a big seller on home video

I don't know about video sales, but I found surprising amounts of Dougram merch during my trip to Japan earlier this year. It and VOTOMS had even more than Code Geass lol.

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 1 points 1 year ago

That sounds amazing hahaha

[–] Outdoor_Catgirl@hexbear.net 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)
