Sorry, there’s protests and we can’t protect you (especially if we turn our backs)?

Affordable Care Act is mostly still there, but

  • the tax penalty for choosing no coverage was struck down in court, so more people are making this choice
  • several states refused federal money to cover lower income
  • republicans re-opened the door to junk policies that don’t provide meaningful coverage

Also the current administration is trying to

  • replace support for state Medicaid programs with block grants that can be used to squeeze the state’s, who will reduce coverage
  • repeal important features of ACA, like no refusal of treatment for pre-existing conditions, 100% coverage of routine care including immunizations

The bit about a tax penalty for absence of coverage is a bit much, does the government really need to kick someone when they’re down?

This was struck down in court years ago.

The “stick” was to encourage people to get coverage ahead of time or face the penalty. If they decided not to, the extra tax could help cover unpaid ER visits where they must be treated whether or not they can pay.

The “carrot” At the same time was reduced price insurance based on your income and expanded Medicaid coverage for people who couldn’t afford anything. This was paid for by the federal government but Medicaid is administered by the state: several Repugnancan states refused the money because their politicians were so set against providing free medical care

After the tax “stick” was struck down, coverage dropped without that penalty, and states where they refused the money left millions of lesser paid people without coverage . So yeah, we needed it

So musk heiling as he approaches naxiism is clearly unacceptable, but Pete Davidson heiling to satirize musk is fine?

Holy shit, I want this presidential debate. I want to decide between these two parties.

Right, this article is based on a flawed premise

To preserve America’s financial primacy, Trump must offer the world compelling reasons to remain within the dollar-based system.

But to all appearances Trump wants the opposite. Ending this system helps reinforce the isolationism that he seems to want, brings more control and wealth to him since everything can be based on bullying, kickbacks and deals, enables corruption, and lets Trump get short term wins. He can brag to his followers that he’s done these things, and they’ll love it.

… the enormous soft power it currently gives us over global finances and trade, the ability to write endless debt, an era of worldwide economic stability will be gone forever. But those aren’t things he values nor can explain to his cult

Here’s another: my family has a traditional Easter breakfast featuring “cheese”. But this “cheese” is eggs.

I don’t see anything like it online in the brief time I looked, but I imagine I have to some how break free of search results only containing contemporary and sponsored links and I just don’t have the time now

From an engineer at one of the legacy car manufacturers, they don’t want CarPlay 2 because it has privacy controls. They don’t want to give up so much access to the car, then have to access it over Apple APIs limited by privacy controls

I still like their technology. Hopefully they can figure out how to divest their owner

So many toddler toys and sporting goods on the curb in front of our house! Got my now college age kid to help.

We put up a huge “free” sign, and at least some things found a new home. Three bicycles, two portable soccer nets, and a pair of roller blades definitely gone but there’s just so much stuff that I really couldn’t say what’s no longer there

I’m disappointed the snow blower didn’t go. Yeah it’s older and needs service but it’s a nice two stage, self-propelled, auto-start model where bringing it back to life would be a fraction of the cost of buying something like that

I find this a bit weird, but I just fell asleep on the sofa while watching YouTube. The weird part was I had a very vivid dream that I was watching an entirely different YouTube video

This morning I made pancakes for my little one (ok, he’s a high school senior, and it was an egg, cantaloupe and some pancakes). His favorite is chocolate chip: I can do that!

As I was making them I realized I didn’t have enough chocolate chips. But I could still be the hero, I had mini-chips to make energy bites!

I don’t know if this counts as science, but I discovered the minis sink right to the bottom while full sized are easier to keep in suspension. The minis made it a lot harder to give each a consistent chocolate taste

The last several months, I’ve started watching YouTube.

I tried looking at what I’ve been watching:

  • lawn mowing
  • drain clearing
  • dog grooming

For those of us still impatiently waiting, what is your experience so far with “Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition”?

—- I ordered just 2 hours in but the vendor I used sold out in 21 minutes. I just found out I also missed the restock, so hopefully some time next month.

Slept in and made waffles for my kids …. I got too damn excited making Liege Waffles for the first time. The kids loved them but it’s a lot of work, even more cleanup, and molten sugar hurts like the dickens

I haven’t been in about three months so I started running out of stuff. It almost got exciting, going while hungry and without a Christmas list. I should not have done that

And still no effing tissue boxes

Syrup from a can (lemmy.world)
submitted 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) by AA5B@lemmy.world to c/dull_mens_club@lemmy.world

It’s the weekend, so I got up early, walked the dog and started thinking about what to make my kid for breakfast.

I spent way too long looking at a four hour recipe (why not, dinner is a smoked pork shoulder that I really need to get started asap) before giving it up

Started off normally: eggs over easy and sausage links. Let’s make the pancakes a little different with bananas and walnut, and top with fruit and nuts ….

Critical question: why do we buy a specific syrup for pancakes? It’s just sugar (or corn syrup). So I used the syrup from canned mangoes!!!! Tastes great but a bit thin and I didn’t use enough. It would be easy enough to thicken up, I’m sure. But why isn’t this the norm? We should have flavored syrup all the time, maybe save money over the maple stuff

Oh, and splurged with egg nog.

I generally use Lemmy through my phone browser: safari on iPhone. Starting a few weeks ago. I can no longer get to the primary url. When I try, the progress bar stops partway through, I get a long delay and eventually see “a problem repeatedly occurred on https://lemmy.world”.

I assumed there was some sort of update and was patient but it doesn’t appear to be getting fixed

As a workaround, I’ve been using https://old.lemmy.world

Is this a known problem or can someone help look into this?

Does anyone know the current state for re-flashing Inovelli Blue switches to Thread? I haven’t been paying attention the last year so I don’t know if they released that or if it works reliably. I did try looking through the community pages without finding anything definite (plus that might not include any actual experience trying it)

I recently saw a couple new Thread devices, so maybe it’s time to start using that. My entire Zigbee network was intended to be flashable to Thread: all I have is SkyConnect and some Inovelli Blue switches. More importantly, that should be a good foundation for a strong mesh to support other devices (and I don’t have a reason for a strong Zigbee mesh). I know SkyConnect multi-protocol didn’t work out but I believe reflashing to Thread is fine. I know Inovelli Blue can’t be reflashed over the air, but that’s ok. Is there Thread firmware and what are your experiences with it?

Throwing this out there in case someone has advice …..

I got a smoker this summer and have been having a great time cooking new (large) meals. But my kids are back at college and I can’t depend on my ex. How do you find people to eat your meals?

It’s a weird situation where it’s a huge pellet grill and smoking tends to focus on large pieces of meat, but not everything freezes well. I want to go gangbusters with feasts, just when I no longer have anyone to appreciate it. Anyone know if there is such a thing as cooking clubs, or something? How do you find one or how do you break into one as a single guy?

Fwiw

  • kids are back from college today, ex is coming over and ex-FiL
  • smoked duck with orange maple glaze
  • chicken for those not willing to try duck
  • rice pilaf
  • arugula salad with toasted pine nuts
  • I plan to throw chocolate chip cookie dough in a cast iron skillet for brownies and top with ice cream
