I wouldn't use NFS/SMB, but iscsi could be an option if the NAS supports the protocol

Hoping to find someone that's interested

I am looking for an 8-bay (or more) desktop NAS (diskless). Have some hardware to trade for the NAS (some options below, not everything for the NAS)

  • 18x 3.8TB SAS SSD
  • 32x 32GB DDR4 ECC
  • SuperMicro 12 bay SAS2 chassi (with 2x PSU)
  • 6x Xeon Gold 6142 CPUs
  • Supermicro 24 bay SAS3 chassis (2x SQ 930w PSU)

Please let me know if this post isn't allowed

I have loads of 8GB modules from DL380 machines if you are UK based?

Since SATA3 connects at 6gbps, I would assume performance would be the same regardless of using SAS3 or SAS2 backplane?

HBA cards:

SAS3 - 9380-4i4e

SAS2 - 9271-4i

No plans to add storage via external port on 9380

The plan is to build a TrueNAS / UnRAID server
