Scott Pilgrim (1998) is perhaps one of the most over the top teenage angst punk bands I've ever heard -- perhaps precisely because the original band members were young teenagers when it was created. Plumtree was formed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1993 and disbanded in 2000.

Lynette Gillis and Carla Gillis still play for the rock band Overnight and occasionally Bells Blanging. Catriona Sturton lives in Ottawa and teaches harmonica inbetween making blues music.

Amanda Bidnall went on to become an accomplished academic in history and is now a freelance editor.

Nina Martin went on to become a professor of Geography with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The song is most well known for inspiring the famous graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim (2004-2010) by also fellow Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley. The Scott Pilgrim franchise would end up taking up much more cultural real estate than the band or song itself.

Ben Caplan is a folk musician from Halifax, Nova Scotia (but born & raised in Hamilton, Ontario). His music seeks to redine what folk music can sound like in the modern world. He has won numerous awards for his music, and has been touring Canada and parts of the world since 2006.

From Elisapie's Inuktitut (2023) Album which was a nominee for the 2025 JUNO Album of the Year award. The album features Inukitut language covers of various classic songs that Elisapie described as having significant personal memory related to. She viewed this project as an opportunity for building bridges between Inuit and non-inuit cultures.

This song in particular is a cover of the famous (and my personal favourite) Leonard Cohen Song Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye (1967).

Leonard Cohen needs no introduction. Perhaps one of the greatest Canadian artists and an pillar of immense pride for the city of Montreal.

Dance me to the End of Love (1984) is one of my favourite less popular (but still insanely popular) Leonard Cohen songs.

Garbage Time (or more commonly known by his most popular channel, Dank Pods) is one of my most favourite Australian content creators.

I'm posting this video to highlight rule #2, in which a video does not have to be made by a Canadian to be welcomed here -- so long as it features Canada prominently in the video.

Hey all! Welcome to EhVideos!

I envision this place to being the Canadian equivalent of r/videos from Reddit or !videos@lemmy.world. As long as it is a video, made by a Canadian or is centered on Canada as a topic, this is the place for it! Whether it be youtube videos, documentaries, or a foreign vlogger visiting.

And of course, as with all of the communities I manage, French and English are equally welcomed and encouraged.

Input is welcomed as to the direction this young community should take itself.

Quotes are from the article. Written by Trevor Wilhelm of the Windsor Star, on the 29th of May, 2025.

"Ward 9 Coun. Kieran McKenzie is calling for a review of hiring and firing practices at city hall after the controversial recruitment of Mayor Drew Dilkens’ wife over hundreds of other applicants.

'The optics of this is one thing,' said McKenzie, who has been in touch with city staff on the issue.

'But there are also reasonable questions to be asked around to what extent did strong mayor powers have any impact on any of those processes, including the one that involved the mayor’s wife?'

A public outcry erupted this week, with concerns about potential nepotism, after Dilkens confirmed his wife has been hired for a newly created project manager job in the parks, recreation and facilities department.

McKenzie said he wants administration to create a report clarifying hiring policies and rules, if those rules were followed, and whether they’re still appropriate under the strong mayor framework.

He [Dilkens] said the new position was created during recent reorganization in the parks department, when the city 'got rid of some people, created some new jobs.'"

Below are my personal opinions.

Wild. Is she going to be leading the same parks department that insisted on purchasing several $100ks of American made park furnishing without even consulting for locally sourced options/pricing? It sounds like they never even gave serious consideration to the other 230 or so applicants.

Even if she truly was hired without any influence by the Mayor (which I think is impossible to NOT influence the hiring decision), this should absolutely be investigated. I think this reeks of corruption, we just need to figure out to what degree of severity.

Awesome soundtrack, awesome game.

Quoted from the article, written by Robert Lothian of CTV News.

"A judicial recount for the riding of Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore confirmed that Conservative Kathy Borrelli has won the seat.

A representative for Elections Canada confirmed to CTV News late Thursday evening Borrelli beat former Liberal MP Irek Kusmierczyk by a margin of four votes.

This follows a judicial recount requested by Kusmierczyk."

Your vote always matter. Always vote. There must be 4 conservative voters who are really glad that they voted, and 4 liberal voters who are very upset they stayed home instead.

He is looking at 4-8 years in prison along with other restrictions such as weapons ban and driving license revoked for 3 years. His defense is trying to plea for 3 years instead.

I'm not well versed in law, but 4-8 years honestly feels low. I hope the victim can get some actual compensation for the life long trauma she will be facing. Her job prospects and education aspirations seem to be severely hindered as a result of this.

Quoted from the article, written by Taylor Campbell of the Windsor Star.

"The court heard that the American travelled from the U.S. to see a Belle River woman he’d been communicating with online. On Dec. 23, 2023, the pair fought over the contents of the woman’s cellphone, and Coulston-Hawkins choked her with his hands. Hours later, he followed her to downtown Windsor and struck her with a vehicle, resulting in “traumatic injuries” to the victim."

"The footage shows the woman running from a car in a lot on Ferry Street. The car then accelerates and veers towards her, hitting her and sending her limp body flying through the air and onto the ground."

"The woman, who was 21 at the time of the incident, woke up in a Windsor hospital with injuries that included broken teeth. She said she’s undergone two surgeries so far, including a bone graft, and has one more surgery to go.

She told the court she’s been diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome, post-traumatic cognitive impairment, and post-traumatic migraines, and has been unable to work or attend school as a result."

The defence is seeking a prison sentence of two to three years.

“'He acknowledged that he made a very brief, momentary bad decision,' defence lawyer Evan Weber told the Star outside court."

"'The fact is, he wants to move on with his life as well. But of course, he wants to take responsibility for his really bad judgment back on that day.'"

Attempting to murder someone in a foreign country? Good way to ruin your life. Absolutely despicable that this woman is now going to be suffering with these injuries for possibly the rest of her life. I wish her all the best moving on with her life and for the full brunt of the law to fall on him. Don't go into other peoples countries and run over their citizens.

"Windsor pianist Mike Karloff will lead a 100th anniversary celebration of Canadian jazz great Oscar Peterson on Sunday, May 25, at Mackenzie Hall.

The Windsor Jazz Concert Series performance will feature jazz standards from Peterson, who was born in 1925 and died in 2007.

Playing along with Karloff will be Michigan musicians Paul Keller on bass, Randy Napoleon on guitar and Pete Siers on drums. Article content

The quartet will perform originals from Peterson’s Canadiana Suite, his classic Hymn to Freedom and arrangements of his riffs with guitar legends Herb Ellis and Joe Pass.

Sunday’s performance begins at 2:30 p.m. at Mackenzie Hall, 3277 Sandwich St. "

Big fan of jazz music and of Oscar Peterson's work in particular. I highly recommend you give some of his music a listen. Ain't nothing better to have playing while taking a bath or reading a good book.

The Content Creator:

Reggie is a rapidly growing Canadian content creator whose content has a focus on absurdist humour with a ting of edge to it. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea but his aesthetic of narrative and humourous editing has gained quite a bit of popularity and is trending with other similar creators. If you enjoy rough & dark humour and much like me probably have attention deficit problem, I heavily recommend Reggie.

The Game:

Aneurism IV is a game created by Vellocet, based in Montreal, Quebec. It is, as described by the studio, "An immersive multiplayer industrial nightmare simulator". The game clearly takes great inspiration from dystopian tropes (as hinted by the studios name, Vellocet, which is a drug from the dystopian 1971 A Clockwork Orange novel.) and, from my own interpretation, gmod roleplaying servers. The charm of the game appears to hinge on the chaos of multiplayer roleplaying intersecting with a parody of common dystopian tropes of gore and brutalism.

The game is currently available on steam for $12.99 CAD. It is the first and only game created by Vellocet and is still being supported with updates and a active multiplayer community of around 1,000 in-game per day.

The owner of those two communities deleted his account. They passed moderation of maplemusic to me and one other person, but givergaming got deleted with their account.

I've created !canadiangaming@lemmy.ca to refill the void. Out of the two, a canadian gaming community was the one I was hoping to take off the most since I'm more of a gamer person than a music person. I've got some plans for fostering a community on there. I'll post about it in !communitypromo once I've got it set up a bit nicer, it is sorta barebones at the moment.

Strange how I didn't want to mod any communities on here but ended up moderating 3!

[–] GrizzlyBur@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

We should probably have a discord set up. I am pretty intimate with how discord servers work and can have one set up. I'd be down to moderating it while it is still small, but once it gets bigger I'd probably want to hand over the reigns.

Discord is just a more natural way for people to talk to one another, and given how gamers are discord target audience, I think the benefits would be obvious.

Yep, lemmy is mostly flying under the radar at the moment but I suspect it would be rather trivial to do the same stuff here as on reddit. The Canadian subreddits there are infamous for heavy astroturfing allegations.

You'd probably enjoy "All Hell For A Basement" by Big Sugar, if you haven't already heard it before. Very catchy and unique.

From Windsor, Ontario. The Tea Party comes from Windsor. I had no idea they came from where I grew up until I searched online for bands from Windsor for this post!

Same, but to a lesser degree. I don't ever lie about who I am, but I split it between several accounts to keep a veil of plausible deniability. And most critically, I never post photos of me or anything or anywhere people who know me could identify.

That is actually why I enjoy lemmy.ca, it is a mostly safe bet to assume most people on here, especially the Canadian communities, are actual real Canadians. But that will surely change once the community grows and more bad faith actors or general idiots come on to these discussions.

As Lemmy.ca gets bigger and bigger I think there should be serious consideration put into how to tackle these issues. I'm fine speaking with anonymous people globally, but for certain topics I'd prefer to know if the person I'm speaking to is even Canadian.

How to verify that while keeping privacy is a tough one, I don't have an answer. IP locking would help, but it is insanely trivial to get a VPN nowadays. A good start would probably be making verification entirely voluntary, and just see how that goes. Or, just give user flairs (once they are added) to users who have a history of engaging with local Canadian communities on Lemmy. It would be a safe bet to assume they are Canadians, or at least having to put in exorbitant amounts of effort to lie.

I know google can give you temporary phone numbers that are intended to be used for work so you don't give your private number. Could probably be used for this. Although if you ever need to recover your email using that phone number, you might be SOL.

[–] GrizzlyBur@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 months ago (4 children)

On the other other hand, it could somewhat make sure only Canadians are using it? Assuming it accepts only Canadian phone numbers. Although I don't think that really means anything with email accounts.

Ngl, I'd love to see online communities where you have to actually verify that you are a real Canadian citizen speaking and not an astroturfing bot or troll-baiter. It's so annoying seeing a person online roleplaying or misleading people to believe they are a Canadian and then you check their post history and they're blatantly not. Or the people that feel compelled to give their wildly uninformed opinions on Canadian topics. I hate to imagine how many people are smart enough to hide they're not Canadian and influencing Canadian online forums.

I think anonymity on the internet is a double edged sword, but one side is getting a lot duller while the side that cuts us only gets sharper. Especially considering the implications of AI.

Animals eat animals. Humans are animals. We are not removed from nature. We are very much part of the ecosystem and have been since homosapiens as a species and every proto human before us.

Responsible hunting is beneficial for the environment, especially in areas where we irrevocably already fucked the environment by removing all of the predator species such as bears and wolves. The deer would overpopulate and destroy the environment like locusts without something (us or predators) to keep them in check.

Essentially, our hands are already muddied from the environmental atrocities of generations before us. Stopping would make it worse at this point. For example, in my hometown, fishermen are required by law to kill invasive species of fish that came from freighter ships from Asia. They have no natural predator and are therefore exhuasting the resources for the native species and driving them to near extinction. If we simply backed off now, the native species would likely go extinct from starvation and predation. We can't make it exactly how it was before, but we can make it better.

That being said, I'm all in for meat alternatives and cultured meats. Less farmland for inhumane & inefficient meat farming that can instead be returned to nature, and reintroduce predators into those reclaimed areas so hunting is not required to keep prey populations in check. It would be wonderful to live in a world where eating animals is not necessary, wild or domesticated.

And of course, the ultimate over all caveat: This is all simplifications and environmental rectification is extremely complex and varies from location to location. In some locations, yep, the answer really is just "leave the animals alone".
