I think it's that the parent company took out huge loans to buy Redbox. And that's the streaming service they setup has ongoing costs and overhead, like licencing. And the loans they took out to make their own content.

I assume what's worse with the 300M scenario is that he still owes the other parties the 1.5B. Since the collateral is now gone, those parties will immediately demand full payment. So he'll be forced to sell other properties to pay those debts, and it's a cascade of a whole other set dominos of fire sales.

It's a huge opening to get sued. So you could lose millions, but it'll never make you a cent. So most are advised to just confirm very basic information like how long the employee worked there.
