captive portal detection, certificate status verification, and iirc server settings updates. yes. none of them are 'absolutely required' but they do exist to improve the reliability and secure operation of the program--and none are secret nasty spying telemetry. just turn those particular settings off as desired.

i nuked my post history and haven't logged-in to 'that site' in about two years. there is one sub i lurk in occasionally that hasn't gained any traction on the lemmy equivalent. that's it other than the (relatively infrequent) pointer to a post from a web search for which no other alternative was listed.

the only way that fucking idiot should get one is if he jumped into a wood chipper and amid the global celebration, a sustainable peace broke out.

me neither. best is a 1070. don't play newer 'demanding' games, nor do i have a system 'worthy' of a better card anyway.

there is mv3 version of ubo here:
https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uBOL-home

dunno how well it works on yt, though. i use dlp on a pc for the time or two a month i 'need to' look at a yt vid.

adguard's free browser extension is also mv3 compliant (for chrome). i think the old adblockplus (disable 'acceptable ads' and ignore offer to 'upgrade' to a paid version) is, too.

they aren't "cracking down on piracy". they're mad that a relatively small portion of their userbase is using their cheap devices to stream third-party content that they make no money off of--and so they're trying to shut down that functionality.

they're moving away from android anyway, so newer revisions of their hardware won't have this same 'problem'

yt-dlp

it or a front-end to it is always #2 on the list of applications to install on my own new os installs--right behind firefox.

i don't use yt much, but it's sure nice to have. i can just drag over or copy/paste urls or video id right from a serp and never have to give google a even single page view.

most the commercial 'free with ads' stuff (like the library of 'hollywood' movies and tv they have) that is wrapped in drm is on or rotates to other free sites (where adblockers or pihole work).

donvict's goon squad is trying to start something that they'll then turn around and blame 'protesters' as they mow 'em all down and haul away those who survive.

more like the garden of weeds is spreading out of control. they want passkeys and oauth so they can become the third-party gatekeeper for everything.

the want them tied to bio because your fingertip or face are harder to share with others, harder to fake, easier to track multiple accounts with, and are tied to real people and identities that can be linked with other data their databases all to make their data and targeted adverts more profitable.

anything that comes in a box.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 weeks ago

that's been done before. maybe next time a different nearby building of a similar color could be chosen.

he's got what he wants.. a wrecked government with crippled enforcement capacity of certain things, tax breaks in the pipeline, and all of our data to match with all of his data.
