It will be when SMS s phased out. That was why it has been a long, uphill battle to get the mobile phone providers to buy in. That has to happen before SMS can disappear. That is why no other "messenger/chat apps" need mobile provider buy-in. RCS happens at carrier level, and not as an installable 3rd party app. It's exactly why it will be adopted by everyone as it is designed to replace SMS.

They're mostly using WhatsApp and I deleted all Meta-owned apps. So, yes if they want to reach me they need to send a text message as most apart from 5 or 10 have never bothered to install Signal, Telegram, SimpleX, Threema, Briar, Jami, etc that I am on.

[–] danie10@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (4 children)

The whole point of RCS was to replace text SMS. The last year or two has seen one mobile provider after the next adopting it. That was the point of RCS, to get beyond a zero encryption text message and text messages that are very expensive in 3rd world countries. So a lot of it was focussed on mobile operators. It has to be enabled actually by mobile operators to work.

The point of the post was that Proton Pass is beating Bitwarden right now to having passkeys for mobile (Bitwarden has still not released that), and Proton Pass can actually export passkeys which Bitwarden does not do, so they are improving. I would not say though they are better all round than Bitwarden. I pay for both but am still evaluating the rest of Proton Pass vs Bitwarden especially around tweaks in options. But Proton is showing some innovation and momentum, while Bitwarden is slowing a bit. For those already using Proton they will likely find Proton Pass good enough to use right now.

True and Matrix is very versatile if you look at what Beeper achieved. Yet it has been around a long time and has never gone big time. The thing though with replacing text SMS, is it has to also comply with what the mobile phone companies use at that level, and I don't Matrix has ever pitched that to them? This is not about the high level messaging we do at app level.

Well, at least say WHY? We know we can't trust Apple (because of the recent backdoor that had to be closed down), Facebook because of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Microsoft because the NSA were given first access to vulnerabilities before patching), the NSA because of the CLOUD Act), etc as these are all documented, analysed and reported on. Your comment really adds zero value to the debate. Proton is under Swiss law for a start, which has a way higher barrier to entry for law enhancement to get any access to metadata. In the USA the law enforcement just buys that data from data brokers. Proton is not in the business of advertising.

A problem I've noticed is I've had one person using RCS, then a month or two later I noticed they'd reverted to text. They seemed to know nothing about RCS and claims they never disabled it. So not sure if that was maybe a phone upgrade. Others I've not had issues with.

[–] danie10@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago (6 children)

The thing also is we can't replace text SMS unless that mode can be phased out, so it needs everyone to adopt whatever the next step is.

[–] danie10@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 year ago (8 children)

The "better" though is over plain text SMS message which we have to pay per message. I use Signal but less than a handful of friends use it so it does not help me much on that front.

True, just hope they eventually get passkeys for mobile.

There is one in three guys who undergo skin irritation once they’ve shaved. Considering that you are reading this post, you’re most likely one of these guys.

If your sensitive skin is a newbie to shaving, then your best bet would be a safety razor. A double-edged safety razor can give you a close and clean shave without as much fuss as a straight razor.

It’s also hygienic than a multi-blade cartridge disposable. Because there are no multiple blades lying closely beside each other, there will be no hair, skin or oil stuck in between the blades. And since we all know that acne results from follicles clogged with sebum and dead skin cells, you won’t get an acne blow-out after shaving with a safety razor.

The beauty of a safety razor’s single blade is that it does not irritate. Multiple-blade disposables actually damage your skin because the blades are scratching the skin repeatedly. It can also lead to a lot of ingrown hairs which are painful.

There’s also a practical benefit to using a safety razor. The replacement blades are less expensive and you don’t have to buy them as often as you would with a disposable cartridge razor. And because it’s usually made of metal or some other form of durable material other than plastic, you’re not contributing to the plastic pollution that’s making a mess out of our environment.

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a real-time text chat social network that was created in 1988 in Finland, and is still in active use today.

In this video I talk about what it is and how it differs from other social networks, how to connect to it, I show what the user interface looks like, and end off with some tips on how to secure your nick ID.

It is often used for direct contact with technology project developers and other tech support, but there are also numerous social chat channels, or you can create your own channel in a few seconds if it does not already exist.

I've been using a Chargie for the last two years on my Android phone (my wife is now using it) and loved that it is a hardware device that shuts off the charging at a user set percentage. It does this by monitoring the battery and temperature via the app running on the phone.

This type of battery charge limiting was exclusively the reserve of rooted phones before the Chargie came along. Yes iOS 14.5 has optimised charging, but that still charges the battery up to 100% which is a full charge cycle. So finally the Chargie is now available for iOS devices, and I've just ordered mine.

With the glued in non-replaceable batteries of today this device at $35 plus shipping is just worth it to me. The manufacturing has improved the quality further to prevent corrosion on the PCB inside which just means the device should be a once-only purchase.

I enjoyed watching some of the Long Way Round, Long Way Down, etc videos with a pair of guys and their support and planning crew tackling travelling on dirt roads through the wilderness.

Noraly, from The Netherlands, though is tackling similar terrain but completely on her own on a  relatively small 250cc bike, and doing all her own video and editing as she moves around. The notorious Sani Pass on the South Africa/Lesotho border is not a pass most of us riders would tackle, yet she goes and does it all on her own.

For the South African leg of the trip she has started amassing a number of followers who are just in sheer awe of her gutsy approach to riding through the wilderness of South Africa, and how she is showing off the amazing scenery and sights along the way. With good reason her YouTube channel has just passed 100 million views, and fans are suggesting she should become an ambassador for her country.

She has previously covered some other continents, so who knows, maybe your own country has featured as well.

This is the reason why I've never used an OEMs app that is unique to them only (well also because I have many friends using different phone brands and OSs). Even when I had an iPhone 3 (and now an iPhone 12 Pro) and a Samsung Android phone, I always stuck to using a service that was generally available across devices.

So yes that was why it was easy for me to switch from an iPhone to Android, and back again now in 2021 to an iPhone. Inter-operability and compatibility is what we as consumers should be demanding and ourselves choosing. The point is of all my colleagues, and friends and family, are using different phones and OSs. We should resist using a product locked only into one ecosystem.

There is a rumour (and only that) that Apple may consider adopting RCS, and if so that would change the game somewhat (and will have some effect on WhatsApp, Telegram and others). SMS was a universal messaging standard dictated by the cellular networks, but it does not look like Big Tech companies will voluntarily support a single standard otherwise. What we should have though is a mandatory open standard used by all that is not aligned to any specific brand or provider. This is something consumers should push governments to adopt.

A parting thought: Imagine a world with no single standard for e-mail or SMS messaging...

We have so many options through which to communicate with our friends and relatives during the lockdown, thanks to our smartphones and the number of apps that serve all possible needs. Impressive as they are though, a smartphone is not suitable for everyone.

On the top of the box is a microphone with push-to-talk switch, a small thermal printer, and a set of 1/4″ jack sockets with associated jump lead. Each socket corresponds to a relative, and an audio message to that relative can be posted via Telegram simply by speaking into the microphone with the button pressed. Replies are then printed through the thermal printer. Meanwhile, behind the scenes is a Raspberry Pi holding it all together.

Telegram of course has an easy-to-use API that can facilitate such communications for free, and Python was used for the coding. He has described the process in the Twitter feed but is aiming to make a proper post about it and publish the code to Github.

Modder ‘Willybach’ released earlier this week a 1.1GB HD Texture Pack for Valheim that aims to improve most of its textures. This pack covers most Biomes so far and many Building and Crafting textures. Furthermore, and by using AI techniques, it tries to stay as close to the vanilla textures as possible.

As the modder noted, loading times are drastically reduced, as well as performance. Additionally, this pack does not suffer from an issue that reverted rocks back to their vanilla textures.

Inspired by another build, [Pierre] set out to build his dream desk that is maximum PC power in minimum space. It is chock full of easily-accessible cavities that hide everything you’d expect, plus a few things you don’t, like a flatbed scanner, a printer, a router, and a wireless charging pad. One cavity is dedicated to I/O, and another has three international power sockets. The only thing it doesn’t hide is the 22″ pen display that [Pierre] uses for sketching, signing documents, and occasionally as a second monitor.

Even one of the table legs has a channel inside to hide the only two cables that leave the desk. Wonder if we'd ever see something like this for purchase, but I suppose the size of items do differ so not so easy.

My wife and I did an epic 5-day motorcycle ride around the Karoo in South Africa in October 2012, and it included a detour away from the Swartberg Pass and down a treacherous pass to stay at a place called Die Hel (or The Hell in English). Going in was easy but getting out after some rain overnight proved to be a hell of a ride... this video shows the dangerous slippery single road out of The Hell, a spontaneous river that needed to be crossed, and I mention the very slippery wet clay road after that.

A research team is testing a prescription video game to see if it can help people who have lingering memory and attention problems after recovering from COVID-19. Many people who survived the disease say that they’re often confused and have difficulty focusing, and research studies show that the symptoms can stick around for months after they recover.

Faith Gunning, a neuropsychologist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, thinks the EndeavorRX video game might be able to treat some of those symptoms. The game, made by Akili Interactive, made history last summer when it became the first video game to get the Food and Drug Administration’s sign-off to be prescribed as a medical treatment. It’s cleared as a treatment for kids between the ages of eight and 12 with ADHD.

Generally speaking traditional shaving with a safety or straight razor already helps prevent skin irritation that causes ingrown hairs, but this is also a handy tip for slightly more general use of Alum itself.
