Solid link, that. I've been watching this story grow. Canadaland... your thoughts?

Anticipating Book > Film (musical?) > Play/Musical

Hopefully, what they padded the movie with is the contents — the politics — of the book. As u/MrVilliam said above:

they took a movie-length two act play and padded it out to chop it up into two movies. And they'll be rewarded for it. Together, they'll gross over $1.5 billion, maybe over 2.

Checking out more of Richard Linklater's work is also highly recommended.

Waking Life (2001)

Philosophy and dreams combine for an enlightening journey. It's a good rewatch if you've not seen it in a long while.

Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004), Before Midnight (2013, I haven't seen this one)

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy have beautiful explorations of love and the human condition.

Arlington Road (1999)

Tim Robbins, Joan Cusack, Jeff Bridges in a taut, pre-9/11 domestic terrorism thriller. I'd pair this with the much better known Denzel Washington film The Siege (1999). Last I checked, this film is not on any streaming platform. Good luck!

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001)

This Inuit story captivated me. An all-Inuit cast portraying a fable from thousands of years ago. The nearly 3h run time will challenge many. The National Film Board of Canada

Brick (2005)

Fans of Knives Out should really see Rian Johnson's first feature film. Smart and steeped in film noir, with a fantastic and unique script, this flick starring Joseph Gordon-Leavitt.

An indiscriminate attack on an unsuspecting population using planted explosives and does not differentiate between civilians and enemy combatants isn't a "terrorist attack."

What is it then? A "police action"? "Self-defense"?

From AP

A booby trap is defined as “any device designed or adapted to kill or injure, and which functions unexpectedly when a person disturbs or approaches an apparently harmless object,” according to Article 7 of a 1996 adaptation of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, which Israel has adopted.

The protocol prohibits booby traps “or other devices in the form of apparently harmless portable objects which are specifically designed and constructed to contain explosive material.”

Now, as far as a legal distinction, the jury is still out. But, morally, this is indefensible to the point of being state-sanctioned terrorism.

I'd really like to see this done without having the ensemble cast of the Avengers films all claim the same income.

You should read a few good books as well. Might I suggest:

On Palestine by Noam Chomsky, Ilan Pappé, and Frank Barat

The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates

A Dying Colonialism by Frantz Fanon

Manufacturing Consent by Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman

Actual journalists like Mehdi Hasan at Zeteo and Amy Goodman at Democracy Now! are doing excellent work on this issue.

Lockpicking Lawyer

Short videos. Reminder that no lock is impenetrable. Also, April Fool's Day videos are very special.

Kaptain Kristian

Video essays. No longer in production, high-quality reviews of some cultural artifacts. He's moved his operation to Curiosity Stream. Made me realize it's worth it to pay creators directly for their work rather than having advertisers and platforms like YouTube. Now, if only I had money to pay these creators. Aye, there's the rub.

Every Frame a Painting

Expert film analysis. If it's not, it sure looks like it is.

CGP Grey

Snarky educational. Fun! The best damn flag contest, best takedown of first-past the post voting, and best reflection on how to go forward after hitting YouTube fame. I still want to know if he and Roman Mars have talked flags.

Kutiman ‐ Thru You

Classic YouTube. 15 years ago, mans took a bunch of other YouTube videos and remixed them into each other, producing meta tracks.

Each of these is run on donations and subscriptions.

Canadaland is moving into the news space, adding to their media criticism roots. Though, I'm uncertain why Karyn Pugliese left. This thread on r/canadaland has the only clues I've been able to find.

Democracy Now! is my go-tonfor daily news. Amy Goodman may just be the journalist I trust the most in the world.

I know that there are problems with Substack. However, Mehdi Hasan is building something pretty special with Zeteo.

No accusation intended. Related my experience and seeking yours. Thanks for sharing what you have read about it.

Then, help me out if you feel inclined. Point me in the direction of some solid sci-fi, written in another language, with good translation to English. I'm always looking for the next read. I could Google it. But, instead, I'm looking for a recommendation from a strong critical eye. As guidance, I'm a pretty big fan of space epics, political intrigue, and/or social

Also, thanks for the language on attenuation. I've done a bit more reading on it, and I've seen the math. What I've learned is that most regulated radio transmissions in the Western hemisphere are capped at 50 kW. There are several transmitters that are in the 150 kW range, and, back in the 30s, there was that one titanic tower in Florida that kicked out 500 000 kW.

At the bottom are the couch-dwelling viewers beholden to all above.

I know I've seen this online somewhere, but I can't remember where. It may have been a cut-scene from a video or a standalone .GIF file. I'm not certain.

If anyone in the community has seen this same image, I'd love to know the source.

They're all the same. Rotated 90° for each one. Except for the 'e', they flipped that one.

Trelawny, Jamaica. Not sure what's happening on the southern side of the island.

Being at a resort during a hurricane is peak boring dystopia. The staff calmly fed us breakfast and handed out pack lunches — sandwiches, cereal, and bananas. Fresh towels delivered just in advance of the lockdown. Gas-powered generators provide lights, TV, and Internet. The same fuel the earliest Cat-5 hurricane in Atlantic history. We stay in our room, entertaining two kids and exchange messages with friends back home and the family we travel with. The mattress for our king-size bed covers the patio doors. The staff residence we see below has its windows boarded up.

We've used two streaming services to watch movies.

The false alarm two hours ago showed that our go-bags are ready, and we can head to shelter in under 30 s. They ever actually confirmed it as a false alarm.

The Secretary General of the legit United Nations, said this.

Are there any adults in the rooms where decisions like "bomb Gaza" are made? Why are so few saying what defeated Jamaal Bowman are saying, "permanent ceasefire now". And remember how Bowman was defeated. $17K/hr.

Also, cute story, Lebanon is the only other country in the world to feature a plant on its flag. The Lebanese are beautiful, Mediterranean people. LEBANON is at the crossroads of empires, and now — as is often the case — Lebanese are victims of outland calamities; Syria, the dock, and econonic collapse.

Hezb. are based there. Lebanon is thus remade like Afghanistan. Isr. reserves the right to "defend".

I've seen this meme before. I have two questions:

  1. What is this meme called?

  2. Is there video of the outcome?

There are only a few books that I've experienced both ways. I'm wondering if this is an area for exploration.

BMO IFL in Toronto. Rumored to be coming to its end.

Democracy dies when any administration can laugh off a 4-word rebuttal of a central plank of the world's most pernicious, deadly conflict(s). Regardless of public opinion, America can't be seen to undermine its own interests.

Almost got it on the day!

I've been listening to a webradio channel from Surgut on Radio.Garden. There seems to be a lot of music produced in Russia, Estonia, and Latvia that pops up on the channel.

Is Chillout big in Russia? Or, is it basically elevator music that no one intentionally listens to?

If it is regarded as music, what — if any — attendant art, writing, or other performance is there?

Is Russia into chillout the way that Americans were into the Blues, ie. does it simply stave off the awful?
