in what seems to be a very popular theme of "maybe we can just live off defense money" for tech outfits, oura is planning to manufacture in texas for simping to the DoD

I'm struggling to sneer it, it's so fucking absurd

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 2 points 2 hours ago

One of quantum’s big selling points is its purported ability to break the current encryption algorithms in use today - for a couple examples, Shor’s algorithm can reportedly double-tap public key cryptography schemes such as RSA, and Grover’s algorithm promises to supercharge brute-force attacks on symmetric-key cryptography.

once again. you're posting fluff about things you do not appear to understand at all. we already have zitron shouting loudly about things he only partly understands, we don't need another.

more widely, your posts are really starting to verge on crank spam. the sheer volume of them stands out, and that they're all this .... barely-anywhere fluff stuff doesn't help

so, for my part, I ask you: please post better

also from a number of devs who went borderline malicious compliance in "adopting tdd/testing" but didn't really grok the assignment

a banger toot about our very good friends' religion

"LLMs allow dead (or non-verbal) people to speak" - spiritualism/channelling

"what happens when the AI turns us all into paperclips?" - end times prophecy

"AI will be able to magically predict everything" - astrology/tarot cards

"...what if you're wrong? The AI will punish you for lacking faith in Bayesian stats" - Pascal's wager

"It'll fix climate change!" - stewardship theology

Turns out studying religion comes in handy for understanding supposedly 'rationalist' ideas about AI.

one that I suspect will surprise none of us

depressing how Cheetoh & Co. continue to wrecking ball the shit out of everything

(wonder how long it is before the US degrades far enough that other countries start ratcheting up border/traveller defenses, compared to the current ~free rein they have (which, y'know, was owed to years of hard and soft power that the orange man is also rapidly pissing away))

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 10 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

it has to be human tampering.

and of course we all have root on the prompt, where - at will - we can just instantly impose all manner of will on the corporate vendor chatbot. y'know, the chatbot operating in a service structured as much as possible to try to do what the corporate vendor wants to desperately maintain

(it continues to astound me that anyone takes yud seriously, at all, ever)

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 1 points 5 days ago

don't think I'd seen that before but I shall earmark it for a weekend perusal :)

Honestly it’s probably most things we post

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 5 points 1 week ago

(like, largely it just bugs me where I know the name from (because being baseline horrendous at recalling names and then recognising this one is uhhhh))

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

shit you're right, I should search offsite (active) chats too

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

....why does that username ring bells in my brain

did it show up here somewhat recently? (I ask right before checking search)

(e: nothing immediately in search but I could swear I've seen that name somewhere in the last few months (and not in a good context))

sidenote

you have so many of these! it's amazing! are you going to publish soon? it seems like it might need a whole guide of its own!

moderately barbed jesting aside, a serious question: have you spoken with any programmers/artists/researchers/.... ? so many of your comments have "part of me feels" parts hitting pop-concern-direction things and, like, I get it, but. have you spoken with any of them? what were those conversations like? what did you take away from them? what stuck with you that you want to share?

Just ran across this and figured I’d link to people, looks interesting

I forgot to post it here earlier but it's revision weekend!

in the spirit of this post, but from the other side

I have a shitdroid that I can't root because the vendor sucks, but google can go fuck themselves too. combined with that I haven't androided much for about a decade and know nothing about the current ecosystem.. I'm looking for good alternatives to a few things. free/foss preferred but I'm pragmatic over picky - if there's a good paid option I'm willing to consider it

immediate known requirements include contact sync, calendar (more business than personal but either works if it's good). maybe also other things I should know about?

judicuous preference to things that support open protocols and self-hosting (i.e. anything that has to use their service to operate - no go)

tell me about good apps! I know about syncthing and photosync

some of the sub’s friends are holding a conference although they’re still not totally comfortable to go public:

but buyers are warned that purchases will “require approval”

aww, the poor babies. even with literal nazis in the whitehouse they still feel uncomfortable to spout their weird shit

hopefully if this thing happens at all, someone documents the everliving hell out of every attendee

some months ago I mentioned I couldn’t see comments in safari but could in fx (on ios). figured it out now: the 1Blocker “disable comments” filter sweepingly includes lemmy comment field types, but for some reason only on safari and not fx (despite apple forcing engine as they do)

the fix: add awful.systems as an allowed domain inside 1Blocker config

the precision and clarity are astounding

by the time the hilbert curves got there my mouth was hanging open, and it still gets better

Need to let loose a primal scream without collecting footnotes first? Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid: Welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful you’ll near-instantly regret.

Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.

If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cut’n’paste it into its own post — there’s no quota for posting and the bar really isn’t that high.

The post Xitter web has spawned soo many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)

Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

Last week's thread

(Semi-obligatory thanks to @dgerard for starting this)

'cuz I definitely do

“stepping away because I want to create the time and space to do my own exploration.”

yeah I completely believe you, weird lady. I too want to vaguely step into the warm embrace of my piles of ill-gotten gold, forgetting about the stressors of how to sell something that doesn’t exist and that you helped claim would be here really soon now. ahhh, bliss..

one’s gotta wonder about the timing of this announcement, right? like come the fuck on

I will say I'm not much of a fan of mysqls but uhhhhh this seems bad

saw this kicking around on the lobsters frontpage

IBM also includes a DPU for accelerating IO, along with an on-board AI accelerator

ah yes. an AI accelerator. for a chip that goes into a system that'll quite possibly have a lifespan measured in decade-partials. in environments so extremely up to date with the bleeding edge of technology that they are absolutely not losing their programmers to retirement. an AI acceleator for that. makes total sense.

imagine being the poor engineers who had to spec that out, design it, and get it actually existing. nevermind even the awe-inspiringly stunning disregard to reality that it takes for some management fuckhead(s) to have "steered" this

Funny enough, I asked why IBM had different terminology compared to the rest of the industry. They said IBM came up with the terminology first, and later on the industry adopted different terminology. It was all lighthearted and funny.

ah yes! funny! haha. not at all some weird insular shit from the same company that runs a worlds-apart platform with a control grip so strong it makes larry ellison check if they're infringing on anything actionable...
