It was totally this, thanks!

I actually tried entering my password with caps lock on just in case, still didn't work sadly

[–] helpmyusernamewontfi 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I encrypted it using Gnome Disks, haven't had any problems with it for years until now

I tried mounting it normally with Dolphin on KDE Plasma, after it was giving me an error I tried unlocking it in terminal via sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda1 backups

Here's the output of the command you sent: /dev/sda1: UUID="109ffa3d-6181-43cf-a813-fdd285386866" TYPE="crypto_LUKS" PARTUUID="ac0402f1-01"

but I suspect that you will need to wipe the drive and set it up again while ensuring that the volume key is stored on the external drive itself.

Whenever I format a drive I just use Gnome Disks since it's the easiest and it lets me encrypt it using LUKs as a option, I've never had an issue like this for years until now since whenever I've used Gnome Disks in the past it always lets me decrypt the drive on any other Linux machine

Hmm, what method did you use to back it up?

I used an app called "Pika Backups" , it shouldn't effect LUKs at all tho and the backups themselves weren't corrupted because it also lets me verify the integrity of the backup files which I did before distro hopping and I got no errors

Edit: Turns out you guys were right, I entered the setup password wrong for LUKs. I got this new Logitech keyboard I got for a gift and I type around 170wpm, but I've been having issues with it kind of lagging keys for some reason. What I did was I opened up a notepad and typed in my password a bunch of times and noticed whenever I would type something such as "stain" for example, it would come out at "stani" despite me looking at the keyboard and knowing that wasn't what I was typing. So I encrypted my drive with the wrong password, but figured out how to decrypt it that way. Thanks for the help doods!

Hello! I have a external drive I've encrypted with LUKs that has irreplaceable backups of mine, and for some reason no matter which PC I try it won't unlock despite it being the correct password. It doesn't give me anything else in the terminal other than what I put in the title.

I recently just backed up everything onto the external drive from my computer cause I was distro hopping. It's worked fine on my PC, I saved the password so I was able to mount it no problem before, but now it won't mount on any other PC I try. It isn't the end of the world since I can just try and copy old data from my computers drive before the format since I haven't downloaded anything yet that could overwrite anything important, but I'd still like to be able to get this external drive unlocked. As I've said, irreplaceable files of mine are on it so I'm hoping to get it working. Thank you!

This argument is nonsense pushed forward by the gun industry to try and get leftists on their side.

I was speaking from my own experience, that didn't come from any industry or organization. If it did I would've said something like "we need fewer gun restrictions!!" I'm speaking personally and sharing my experiences as an activist. It's what made me start to carry for me and my peers safety based off what I have previously told you. Because I also believe that my queer friend wouldnt still be here if not for her firearm.

But I absolutely protest for greater gun restrictions and want to actually allow the CDC to investigate gun violence. Because, yes, the CDC isn't allowed to.

I 100% agree we need way more restrictions when it comes to firearms, but it is absolutely necessary for people to have a firearm for their own protection. I personally know activists, especially LGBT rights activists, who's life depended on that side holster of theirs and are still here to this day because of it.

Humble Bundle used to only be known for selling game bundles for a discounted price, but I recently found out they now have a regular storefront and let you buy games individually!

(If you have anxiety about death then maybe you shouldn't read this post, just letting you know!)

Edit: Thank you guys for being so quick to post your comments and give your thoughts, it makes me wish I said something sooner rather than dealing with it on my own. You guys are seriously awesome, and have made me want to fight way harder to be a better person for my friends and family, and everyone else around me. I think tonight I'll finally be able to sleep, and I'm looking forward for tomorrow and to be able to talk to my Dad about how I'm feeling and what I'm thinking about all this, and to spend as much time with him as I can. Take care of yourself guys! And again, thank you so, so much. I seriously feel way better and my anxiety is a lot less now.

Before joining Lemmy I used to be a devoted Christian since my family raised me as one and have been Christians for generations. And to add important context, I'm not talking about judge mental homophobic trump supporting Christians that judge gays and everyone else they see who don't live the way they live. I'm talking about being a real follower of Christ who loves thy neighbor and knows we have no right to judge, not what most church's are today who just exist to make a profit. My family are bible based Christians and raised me as one too, not by propaganda machines. (Or at least the propaganda that politicians or "Church's" who exploit vulnerable people for their money like to spread around. The "buy my book to change your life" or "plant your $1000 seed" type of shenanigans makes me sick.)

Anywhoo, while being on Lemmy and learning a lot about U.S. politics I just have never seen on other social media sites like X and Reddit, and talking about science, capitalism, global warming, and so on and so fourth with the incredible people on here, it has really broaden my view on certain subjects and be a lot more open to a lot more ideas, one of which is Atheism.

I haven't thought about it too much, but recently my Grandfather died and so my emotions and thoughts have wandered about him and about loosing someone I care a lot about, and then a question popped into my head; is he truly in a "better place"? Do they actually go somewhere? What will happen to my Dad?

After that random thought, my brain has kind of spiraled out of control about this topic and I haven't been able to sleep well since I've been having anxiety thinking about death. What is the point if all of life (our life) is truly just our brains, and our brain stops working? Is it really just, nothingness? What is the point of making all these amazing memories with family and friends that I cherish more than anything in the world, if all these memories are going to be forgotten? Whether its today, or 80 years from now? With this ideology, when I stop breathing, I will quite literally become nothing. There will be nothing. I am dead. It's made me into this "why should I care" mood about almost everything.

I think I've kind of made my anxiety worse during the last few nights since I also decided to look up what its like to die and what scientists have said about the topic, whoops! Turns out our brain can still think 2-15 minutes after our hearts stop beating! I know I'm joking here which I tend to do when I'm in these situations but I have been extremely anxious when it comes to the fear of death. Not in a "I'm scared to use this knife to cut a slice of tomato" kind of way, but a "when we're gone there will be nothing and I will remember nothing and become nothing" sort of way.

Not trying to get political here, but with this thought in my mind for the last couple of days and hearing about situations like Palestine has made me completely rethink everything like life itself, and now every time I hear about Palestine or Ukraine or whatever else going on in the world, I can't help but burst into tears.

Sorry for the rant or whatever this is, just asking what you guys think or how you live your life if thats alright. Take care of yourself!

Just got an amazing deal for these three and wondering where I should start!

If so, why? and how's your experience been?

I've seen a lot of posts here on Lemmy, specifically in the "fuck cars" communities as to how Electric Vehicles do pretty much nothing for the Climate, but I continue to see Climate activists everywhere try pushing so, so hard for Electric Vehicles.

Are they actually beneficial to the planet other than limiting exhaust, or is that it? or maybe exhaust is a way bigger problem?

Recently a game called "The Finals" has released and after their beta was over they stopped supporting Linux, and a lot of people are clearly pissed and have sparked a ton of debates within their Discord server but I constantly and constantly see an argument brought up by Windows users in the community saying that they dont want Linux support and argue that enabling Linux support is only going to add more cheaters into the game. (as its a pretty big problem right now even though they're using EAC.)

I don't believe it, I haven't seen any proof of it, but I wanted to ask you guys what your thoughts are on it. And, if you have some sort of source proving whether or not this is the case, please do share.
