project’s donation funds for personal expenses, like holiday trips

I do have the same overall concerns though and for me enough reason to switch the moment its possible also. But I tend to see the 'the holiday trips' as a symtpom instead of a problem. Later on they explained that some developers received 3 months salary worth of pay over the course of 4 years. Putting a lot more time in it during those four years. If I contributed that much for free I also would spend it on a holiday. But the problem is like you said transparancy:

  • No openness of financial transactions which I guess showing salary wouldnt be a problem and if everybody was able to see the salary was reasonable. (and I dont care what people do with it in their private live).
  • Maybe they didnt organise it that way (paying oneself for labour and tell everyone) but maybe they used it directly for holidays etc, which is a problem for the business entity they have I guess. Like my boss paying my holiday instead of my salary.
  • Reluctant to answer questions in reasonable timeframes (couple of months)

OM and for now CoMaps are faster and easier to learn. For most people. With OSMand configurations are endless and people tend to get lost in them. Also the map data of OM is highly filtered OSM data. Meaning smaller files and a faster app.

The downside is less features, but as always ... if you dont need the absent features ... its a plus.

Now whats interesting how they both will keep it that way. My theory is when they listen to EVERY wish from random users (with other persona and user stories) they eventually become like OSMand too.

That .... makes a lot of sense, thanks 🙏🙏

Oh never thought about using ls to "test" things, thnx!

Yeah agree, its a work provided laptop, they allowed local admin etc but require Windows (at least that is) so just glad they gave me a HP laptop with 500GB SSD and for me certain freedom to configure dual boot etc

Got chills down my spine initially but was a "good" scare .... the one which makes me carefull next time before any real damage is done. 🙈👍

Strange thing is, instead of moving folders (which isnt possible without root anyway) it looked like some of them got copied instead. Compared some folders from /boot/grub with the dump in my homefolder and they were the same files (number and names etc).

I took a deep breath (was not being root, how bad could it be?) and rebooted. Luckily everything seemed fine.

Grub letting me choose between Debian and Win11 (its a laptop from my employer) and both booted if choosen. Thanks for all the advice.

If the actual command was this .... mv /*/*/* ./ would moving stuff out of /boot or /dev folders make more sense?

Background:

I think I messed up ... Wanted to get a lot of files out of a nested folderstructure 3 levels deep and used mv /*/*/* ./ somewhere deep in my personal folders. I got a lot of errors and quick as I could stopped it. Now that folder is is messed up with a lot of stuff (see below) which I dont know the origin of. The good news: I have fairly recent backups

Questions:

  • Could they be from subdirectories in my home folder?
  • Could they be from subdirectories outside my home folder? Especially grubenv caught my eye.
  • Could it be potentially dangerous to reboot? I leave my PC on untill I know more.
  • Would it be possible to reverse the moving in some way, to put them back where they belong, even manually?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Crossover .... (lemmy.ml)

I know Apple's adaptation of Asimovs books got off the rails but didnt expect this crossover ...

I use Firefox (LibreWolf with Mozilla sync) on multiple devices. To have my tabs, extensions and history easy available I use Mozilla for syncing that data.

Would it be possible to just use a generic sync service like rsync or something, to sync the profile folders and every file in it?

Or would that break or corrupt data?

Was wondering why no new messages turned up, since tuesday or something. Turned out the Librewolf Matrix room is changed / upgraded or something like that. It involves joining once again. But both in Element and Fluffy clients I get this error:

MatrixError: [403] You do not belong to any of the required rooms/spaces to join this room. (https://matrix-client.matrix.org/_matrix/client/v3/join/!AMixpitUKQHatikSri%3Amatrix.org?server_name=matrix.org&server_name=envs.net&server_name=fedora.im&via=matrix.org&via=envs.net&via=fedora.im)

Is there a way to join the matrix chat room one again?

I do see the space with the 3 rooms.

Background: I use profiles frequently to separate work, home and other things. In some profiles I use other DRM and fingerprint settings etc Also I switched from installing from flathub to manual (https://librewolf.net/installation/debian/)

Issue: Since a couple of weeks, some profiles dont start. Choosing them will amount to nothing. Librewolf doesnt start, not in the background nor in the foreground. Choosing another profile and after that, the intended one sometimes works around the issue.

Research:

The installs.ini shows the default profile TWO times:

[AA67A15BF0F93AE3] Default=Thuis Locked=1

[6C4726F70D182CF7] Default=Thuis Locked=1

Both installs are also mentioned in profiles.ini.

Question:

  • Is having 2 install entries the cause? Because the profilemanager doesnt know what to do?
  • Should I remove one of them but which? Opening the /.librewolf/Thuis profile doesnt give information which one is in use. Or I dont know where to look. Assuming this will help of course.

B612 is a free and open source font that was designed from inception for use on aircraft cockpit screens specifically.

I didnt need even more motivation to degoogle but got it anyway.

My questions are:

  • Does the DuckDuckGo Firefox extension "Privacy Essentials" add a local css file to every visited site?
  • Can others reproduce this?
  • Is this harmfull or not?

Background:

I have a simple static one page site with just one html and css file. It's completely tracker free. Debugging it a bit with developer mode (F12) on I discovered a second css file. This file isnt on my webserver but added local. To pinpoint what caused this I removed every add-on / extension in my browser one by one, reloading and checking my website every time. Took me a while because didnt expect this one causing it.

To reproduce:

  • Install the extension from the link.
  • Open a random site
  • Check in developer mode the tab Style editor.
  • Scroll and look for a file named %3Ais(%5Bid*%3D'google_ads_iframe'%5D%.css or something like that.
  • Remove the extension and refresh.
  • Check if the file disappears.

Content of the css file: :is([id*='google_ads_iframe'], [id*='taboola-'], .taboolaHeight, .taboola-placeholder, #credential_picker_container, #credentials-picker-container, #credential_picker_iframe, [id*='google-one-tap-iframe'], #google-one-tap-popup-container, .google-one-tap-modal-div, #amp_floatingAdDiv, #ez-content-blocker-container) { display:none!important; min-height:0!important; height:0!important; }

Edit 25-03-2024: Changed title to not give the wrong impression. See comments below.

My main question is about /run/user/1000:

  • Should I avoid touching it?
  • Could I delete it?
  • Is there something wrong with it?

Background: I'm fairly new to Linux and just getting used to it.

I use fsearch to quickly find files (because my filenaming convention helps me to get nearly everything in mere seconds). Yesterday I decided to let it index from root and lower instead of just my home folder.

Then I got a lot of duplicate files. For example in subfolders relating to my mp3 player I even discovered my whole NextCloud 'drive' is there again: /run/user/1000/doc/by-app/org.strawberrymusicplayer.strawberry/51b78f5c/N

Searching: Looking for answers I read these, but couldnt make sense of it.

Puzzled:

  • Is this folder some RAM drive so my disk doesnt show anything strange? Because this folder doesnt even show up at the root level.
  • Are these even real? Because the size of it (aprox 370 GB) is even bigger then my disksize (screenshot).

Any tips about course of (in)action appreciated.

Although the headline focusses on a obvious category of media, it really can go wrong on a lot of other categories as well.
