The whole financial and intellectual apparatus that controls academia, journalism, and publishing sidelines peripheral countries. We can easily get around this by making a list of peripheral nations and checking on them in the outlets that do cover them, but most people prefer to stick to what is sensational on social media, which is also dominated by western attitudes and tastes.
I think it would be a good wake up call to the people on this site who subsist entirely on youtube videos, bad twitter and reddit takes, and arguing. The idea of anyone spending their time that way makes me uncomfortable. Maybe driving away the last thing that makes them feel relevant could drive self-improvement.
