i was offered one but im not really interested in making an account unless i can do it on a different instance. i do not trust the official one a single bit, lol

its kind of crazy to me how many people are moving over to that place. on one hand i appreciate that it's somewhat containing twitter culture ~~protecting much better new socials like cohost~~ but on the other, it is frustrating to have no access to so many people who switched to blue sky's with its bizarre and abrubt popularity as an alternative platform despite being diet fediverse.

at least now we can just subscribe with RSS to get updates and actually have the links be usable

Invidious. It got so bad that I just gave up and switched to piped which has been... well, not perfect, but definitely far more consistent.

that's reasonable i guess, though im only really interested in YouTube frontends for the privacy benefits which piped helps greatly with. why not use something like revanced, or why not turn off the piped proxy in libretube?

oh LOL that's a pretty great reason!

Philosophically, obviously I'm against DRM blah blah and no matter how easy it is to crack I just don't really like the idea of spending money on a license to play something instead of the something itself. I also don't really like contributing to the online services monopoly steam seems to be maintaining. There's a myriad smaller stuff that drives me away from steam that I don't really feel like explaining, but those two are the main philosophical reasons.

Practically, for reasons I obviously won't disclose, my account is at risk of spontaneous termination if they wanted to, so its not really worth investing more money into my walking time bomb of an account.

I get why steam makes sense for most people and I don't have any intention to shame people for... well, being normal where I'm not. I just like having friends who share my personal preferences!

These general users are shifting to Discord. The people I actually WANT to interact with are moving to indie social platforms (i.e cohost, fediverse, spacehey) and revitalizing forums. I strongly recommend against seeing this as a systemic issue against social networks/media; it's an issue with VC funded ones that prioritize growth above a better platform and community. For the health of the internet, please do not flee to walled garden discord servers. Use social media for what its for; make connections with random people. Using it just to follow famous people you'll never directly interact with will isolate you.

ive tried to get nextcloud working several times and it just seems to never work for some reason... maybe i should set it up on a pi ive got laying around instead of my main server lol

seconded. the built-in custom css selection is excellent. ive been strongly considering self-hosting an RSS bridge, but i think my server has too much unpredictable downtime for it
