[Documentary] The blood on our Controllers - The Complicity of the Game Industry in the Palestinian Genocide

Watch here

Quoted from the video description:

"The blood on our Controllers" is an amateur documentary made to denounce the role of the video game industry in the normalization of the Palestinian genocide, through its close relation with the military industrial complex and the representation of Arab communities in games. It is a collaborative work between developers, artists, animators, and academicians to show how our games are doing wrong or right, what the game industry could be and what needs to be done for it to happen.

It's time for those who have been the loudest for so long to try and learn to listen.

Speakers (in order of appearance): Hippolyte Caubet, Rami Ismail, Younès Rabii, Florent Maurin, Meghna Jayanth, Holly Nielsen, Rasheed Abueideh, Elodie Roblain, Florence Nichols Smith

A world leader in hydroelectricity, Canada has also been forced to cut exports to the United States, which have reached their lowest levels in 14 years, according to the national statistics agency. For three straight months earlier this year, Canada had to import energy from the US -- a first in eight years, and a role reversal that highlights dramatic shortfalls in hydropower production in Canada and abroad.

The International Energy Agency said 2023 marked "a record decline" in global hydropower generation, with other major producers like China, Turkey and the US also impacted. The IEA tied the declines to "severe and prolonged drought" in major producing regions.

In Canada, which gets 60 percent of its energy from hydropower, drought has hit hard in the key production provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba and Quebec.

The combined impacts of extreme drought and extreme floods are "exponentially increasing" the challenges facing the hydropower sector, said Reza Najafi, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Ontario's Western University. [...] Up to 50 percent of the country's dams are more than 50 years old and not designed to cope with extreme weather swings, he explained.

For Philippe Gachon, a professor at the University of Quebec in Montreal, it is crucial that national planning bodies consider the dramatic water cycle changes when contemplating Canada's hydropower future. "We are going to have volumes of water that we have never seen before," he told AFP.

There are a lot of questions and intentions to move into gamedev from developers who are burnt out at their jobs. And that’s okay. From my own experience, I have a couple of pieces of advice that are not very professional.

1. It won’t save you from everything you’re so tired of.

Firstly, game development, like other areas, is full of its own nuances and pitfalls. And given that a person gets used to everything, you will soon find yourself in the same position. It’s better to look at game development as a hobby, a distraction from your main job. Moreover, for the first few years you will still not be able to earn enough to support yourself and your family.

2. There are no universal tools.

The main question in any field of programming today is which framework and programming language to learn. Here everyone will choose their own - what they can master. But it’s worth noting that in game development when switching, for example, from web development, you need to understand that you won’t be able to use React or even JavaScript if you want to become a real pro. You have to be willing to study hard. These are low-level languages - C, C++, and the basics of mathematics and physics, and possibly machine learning. It won’t be easy, you just have to keep going. Take a break and study further. There is no need to strive to immediately choose the top and most complex tools; the main thing is to start somewhere.

3. This is a market with tough players.

If you think that you can create a game in a couple of months and immediately start making money, then this is not so. Of course, you can try, but the network is already full of low-grade content, and sometimes you just wonder about the mental health of the “creator”. I think it’s better to create one project, but ideal, adequate and interesting.

4. Hype is temporary, and you only live once.

Lots of technologies, engines, etc. surrounded by a lot of hype. This is not bad for the creators of these things, but if you run after the clouds, you will never get anything done. Let your achievements be modest, but they will be yours. This will save you from burnout at your main job, otherwise there will only be dissatisfaction with yourself.

Relevant quote regarding Snapdragon X

“As this was the first full quarter of shipments for Snapdragon X Series PCs, we saw sequential growth of around 180% compared to Q2 2024. However, as a proportion of the total Windows market, the products remain very niche, at less than 1.5% share. The top shipping vendor was Microsoft, which has transitioned most of their Surface line to the platform. Behind them was Dell who has embraced the new platform quite strongly in terms of SKU count, followed by HP, Lenovo, Acer and Asus (all four with similar volumes).”
