The large leaves of the aguaje, a tropical palm tree that grows in the peatlands and other seasonal wetland areas in tropical South America, form a rounded crown on its head from which its oval-shaped fruits hang heavily in bunches from December to June. When the reddish maroon reptilian-looking fruits are ready for harvest, trained tree climbers from the Indigenous Maijuna communities in the Peruvian Amazon climb the 35-meter (115-foot) gangling trees to collect them.

Previously, the Maijuna people harvested the fruit by cutting down the trees. So did many others, such as Kichwa and Kukama Kukamiria communities. While easier, this led to the degradation of the landscape and genetic diversity as aguaje trees (Mauritia flexuosa) are dioecious, meaning only female trees produce fruit. In the 1990s, the discovery of its market potential led to large-scale commercial extraction by both Indigenous communities and outsiders across the Peruvian Amazon.

“Our ancestors weren’t aware that they were harming their palm trees,” Edber Tang Rios, president of the Maijuna-Kichwa Regional Conservation Area (ACR) management committee, told Mongabay over WhatsApp voice messages. “They had no knowledge. They cut it down and, little by little, it was dying out.”

Wieso?

Wie ihr wisst, muss man Zimmerpflanzen nach einer gewissen Zeit in einen größeren Topf klatschen, weil, zumindest in Erde, der Boden ausgelaugt ist.

Aber auch beim Anbau ohne Erde, z.B. in Hydrokultur, kann es manchmal sehr vorteilhaft sein, das zu tun. Das liegt daran, dass nur die jungen und weiter verzweigten feinen Wurzeln nennenswert Wasser und Nährstoffe aufnehmen können, weil ältere zu dick dafür sind.

IdR muss dann ein neuer und größerer Topf her. Aber manchmal kann oder will man das einfach nicht tun.
So zum Beispiel auch bei meinem Bananenbaum. Der hat einen bestimmten Topf, und da soll er bleiben.

Jedoch wurde es mir auf Dauer in den letzten Wochen und Monaten zu nervig, jeden zweiten Tag meine Nährlösung nachfüllen zu müssen, die bei anderen Pflanzen teilweise wochenlang hält.

Die Light-Variante für Faule (kurzfristig)

Ich habe recht regelmäßig die Wurzeln abgeschnitten, die an den Schlitzen seitlich rausgehängt sind.

Damit signalisiert man der Pflanze "Heyda, bis hier hin und nicht weiter" und sie versucht dann, im Innentopf woanders hin zu wachsen.

Während das andere eher eine Maintenance-Lösung ist, ist das hier etwas rabiater.

So sah der Wurzelballen davor aus:

Wie ihr seht ist hauptsächlich das untere Drittel feiner durchwurzelt, während der obere Teil von dicken Pfahlwurzeln dominiert wird.

Jetzt schnappen wir uns ein scharfes Messer und entfernen dieses untere Drittel.

Der Vorteil ist bei mir noch gewesen, dass im Wurzelballen viel übrige Erde und tote Wurzeln waren, die langfristig in Hydro Probleme gemacht hätten. Diese hab ich nun total easy wegbekommen. Außerdem konnte ich ein paar Ableger entfernen und diese vereinzeln, ergo, mehr Bananenbäume! :D

Nachdem ihr das Drittel entfernt habt, könnt ihr den Topf mit frischem Substrat befüllen und die Pflanze wie gewohnt einbuddeln.

Ich empfehle zusätzlich, noch etwas Beneficial Microbes (Mykorriza) dazu zu tun, um Infektionen durch böse Mikroben zu verringern.

Die Pflanze wird in den nächsten Tagen etwas beleidigt aussehen und in den nächsten Wochen vermutlich auch ein paar Blätter verlieren, aber das ist normal. Das war ein riesen Stress für sie und sie muss nun viele Nährstoffe aus den Blättern in die Wurzeln ziehen, um diese zu regenerieren.

Aber was hat das gebracht?
Die Pflanze ist nun gezwungen, aus den "brachliegenden" dicken Wurzeln junge effizientere Wurzeln herauswachsen zu lassen, die den Platz im Topf nun deutlich besser nutzen können.
Das heißt, sie wird in Zukunft wieder besser und gesünder wachsen können, und ihr könnt euch den neuen Topf sparen.
