Lemmy mobile apps

You should start using one of these ASAP since the web browser user interface is quite ugly, even with themes.

Here are the problems I want to solve:

The same app everywhere

It will run as a website, iOS app (also on macOS), and Android app. It will be responsive, supporting phone, tablet, and computer screen sizes along with everything in between.

And I’m not talking about simply resizing the interface. Navigation (e.g. sidebar or on mobile bottom tab bar) will match what you would expect to see on the device size you’re using. But everything else (e.g. posts) will look the same, which I hope will make it really easy to jump from mobile to desktop.

Onboarding and configuration

The app will allow you to configure it to look like a typical Reddit or Lemmy app. During the onboarding process, I will prompt you, asking which style of interface you prefer. Consider these presets, which change a bunch of more granular configuration options. I will also give you the ability to fully customize each option instead of picking a preset.

Caching and offline support

This is where it starts to get more tricky. Caching is easy. If you launch the app, it will have everything you previously saw still loaded.

I would like to make it so upvoting, for example, can be done offline. The app will optimistically apply the upvote to the post or comment, then when you reconnect to the internet, it will actually apply the upvote. This is a difficult problem to solve, so I can’t promise this will work, and it would likely be the last feature I add.

I need your feedback

This is a big project to undertake. I really want a Lemmy client that checks those boxes for myself, but I’m curious if any of those resonate with you? Is there anything I missed that you would like to see? If I do build this, I will likely have to keep the project very focused as far as features go initially.

Just for context, I’m using Voyager on iOS currently. I really like it, but the “the same app everywhere” concept and making it easier to onboard Reddit users are my main motivations for creating my own app. My app will also be fully open source

Summary

Elon Musk accused Alexander Vindman, a key witness in Trump’s first impeachment, of treason on social media, suggesting he should face “the appropriate penalty.”

Musk’s comments followed Vindman’s claims that Musk may have shared sensitive information with Russia’s Putin and used Twitter for disinformation.

Vindman denied the accusations and called Musk’s remarks baseless.

Critics condemned Musk’s statements as dangerous, especially given his ties to Trump’s incoming administration.

Musk provided no evidence for his claims, reviving past allegations against Vindman of “dual loyalty” rooted in antisemitic tropes.

One obvious example of these fads is the dead salmon hat trend of 1987. In the Puget Sound area of the northeast Pacific, one female orca from k-pod began carrying a dead salmon around on her nose. Over the next five to six weeks, the behavior spread, and by the end of it, orcas from her own and two other pods were wearing dead salmon hats. attack-orca

"Observations indicate they are likely finding plenty of salmon during their stay and may be why they have remained inland so long," the whale sighting network reports, adding, "check out this photo of J27 Blackberry sporting a salmon hat."

As yet, we still don't know why orca perform this behavior. It could be that some of the orca were around during the last salmon hat phase, and are bringing it back while salmon supplies are plentiful. One idea, highlighted by New Scientist, is that they are simply using their head as storage space, saving excess salmon caught during salmon abundance for later consumption. Maybe it's less of a salmon hat trend, and more a case of using their head as a lunchbox.

From A Place Called Hope

Chimney Caps. They're a MUST. Cavities in nature, offer places to hide, nest, or seek food. Our open chimney stacks are an invitation for disaster. Many critters can enter but when it's time to get out, the animals often find themselves stuck. This time of year, when fires are burning, our wildlife can become victims to smoke inhalation and if that's not bad enough, they can also succumb to serious burns. Please install chimney caps to prevent this common conflict we impose on our wildlife.

This Barred Owl was stuck in the stack above the flue for days. Dehydration and starvation are a common result to any creature that is trapped. Luckily homeowners did not add to the dilemma by starting a fire! Instead, they called their local Animal Control Department in Middletown and were directed to APCH. Our team is familiar with these distress calls and Todd responded promptly. This was an older fireplace and the flue was really tight. Not to mention the fact that the owl was able to get up the chimney above arms reach as the stack curved.

The good news is Todd was prepared and ultimately succeeded in getting the owl extracted safely. The owl has been hydrated and will be ready to eat a meal on Thanksgiving. A free meal! We can't offer food immediately to an animal that is dehydrated or starving, we must first push fluids to get the body functioning properly for digestion. But we anticipate a full recovery.

The owl is dirty and dehydrated and possibly a bit pissed off! But it could have been so much worse!

I'm currently looking for a replacement to castbox. Castbox us OK, but I want to learn what else good is out there. Bonus points for one that has movement-sensitive sleep timer the way Smart AudioBook Player has.

UPDATE: Testing out Antennapod. Looks nice, and seems to do what I want it to do. I need to experiment with the auto-download a bit and see if it behaves the way I want it to. If it does, we have a winner.

Dramacool emerged in the early 2010s, catering to pirates with a love for Asian dramas. The operation eventually drew an audience of millions but, in true drama fashion, announced its own demise this week. The site's operators cite 'copyright' as the reason and recent domain name troubles and pressure from Hollywood studios likely played a role.
