For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Elevator to the Gallows (1958), a classic French film noir about a businessman who kills his boss after beginning an affair with his wife. But then his plans to cover up his actions go awry, he has to commit more crimes, and the cops start closing in. Will he get away with it? We’ll have tto watch to find out. This is considered one of the best French films of the 1950s, and one of the best works of director Louis Malle, whose movies My Dinner with Andre (1981) and Au Revoir Les Enfants (1987) we previously watched. Let’s give it a whirl.

After that is the fifth Mad Max entry, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024), George Miller’s highly-anticipated follow-up to his Australian outback action film Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). This one is a prequel that tells the origin story of Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road, but Anya Taylor-Joy in this one), following her quest to escape the clutches of arch-misogynist Immortan Joe and kick some butt along the way. Chicks rock.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, 8PM EST, by popular demand. It’s the legendary superpowered schoolgirl lesbian theatrical anime feature Project A-ko (1986), along with its shorter straight-to-video sequel, Project A-ko 2 (1987), both remastered! No more VHS rips. They are pretty much Chicks Rock: The Movies.

After that is The Hunger (1983), a stylish vampire romance about David Bowie discovering that his immortality is wearing off, and consulting an expert on aging on what he can do to forestall his inevitable death. He might have to feed on some young blood. Oh no! Director is Tony Scott of Top Gun (1986) and True Romance (1993) fame; this is generally considered one of his better films.

Note that Hexbear is going to have some downtime today; assuming Hextube remains up, we will begin as normal whether the main site is back up or not. If it does not, better hope the maintenance is completed in time.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

Whoops I forgot what day it was.

First up is Fire and Ice, in this animated tale, a tiny village is destroyed by a surging glacier, which serves as the deadly domain for the evil Ice Lord, Nekron. The only survivor is a young warrior, Larn, who vows to avenge this act of destruction. The evil continues, however, as Nekron’s palace of ice heads straight towards Fire Keep, the great fortress ruled by the good King Jarol. When Jarol’s beautiful daughter, Teegra, who has a real set of badonkers, packin some dobonhonkeros, massive dohoonkabhankoloos, big ol' tonhongerekoogers is abducted by Nekron’s sub-human ape-like creatures, Larn begins a daring search for her and her bonkhonagahoogs, I mean just humongous hungolomghononoloughongous. What results is a tense battle between good and evil, surrounded by the mystical elements of the ancient past.

Next up is Fritz the Cat. A swinging, hypocritical college student cat fucks and smokes his way through a satirical vision of the 1960s.

think its interestingly written review sadness-abysmal

Zone of Interest is, more than a dramatization of the Holocaust, a dramatization of the dialectic of enlightenment that led to it, and that continues to animate present conditions: from the world-historical crime of American mass-incarceration, to Frontex, to the hyper-violent exploitation of African mine workers. The Zone of Interest extends over the globe, the food is nurtured by ash, the water runs clear over the bones of the dead. It is only through the anti-empathetic camera of Glazer that we can reach such a conclusion.

Fair warning, it is EXTREMELY HORNY, and violent, but in a very creative and cool way.

Also the cinematography is gorgeous. Probably the best movie I've seen this year.

Howie Scream

(also known as the Howie Long scream or Screams 3; Man, Gut-Wrenching Scream and Fall into Distance) is a frequently used film, television, and video game stock sound effect for a scream. Often compared to the Wilhelm scream, its prominence in a number of movies has launched a few nicknames such as Howie Long Scream, in reference to Howie Long's character's death scene in the 1996 film Broken Arrow.[3] It appears to have originated from a fight scene in the 1980 film The Ninth Configuration.[4]

While Wilhelm got featured in all the big movies I remember the Howie Scream being a favorite of cheap slop like television and video games.

Posting this thread a little earlier than normal because this night will be a little unusual. For this special Thursday Political Theatre Night, 9PM EST, Hexbear Comrade @dead asked the powers-that-be for a brand-new channel on Hextube, and got it, at https://live.hexbear.net/c/news , where he will host the real-life comedy movie known as the Presidential Debate. Behold as two doddering old men stumble over their words and lose their train of thought as they struggle to convince you why they should be the steward of a genocidal empire. Be prepared for psychic damage. Thank you to Comrade @dead for hosting this very special event. All credit and gratitude goes to him. Make sure to show up at 9PM sharp, as the event is live.

After the debate is over, come over to https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies for Civil War (2024), a dystopian thriller from Alex Garland, the director who brought you Ex Machina (2015) and Annihilation (2018). Oh god, America has fallen apart! Roving bands of marauders now terrorize the countryside as a group off war journalists try to reach Washington DC to understand what’s really going on. Somehow, California and Texas ended up on the same side. Will we find out how? I dunno. Let’s watch.

The debate begins at 9PM EST, and the movie will start shortly after it ends, at about 11PM EST.

OK so reverse order timeline of events like this that I'm aware of

  • Laura Bailey being harassed for something a character she voiced in The Last of Us Part 2 did
  • Anna Gunn being harassed because people misguidedly and misogynistically didn't like Skyler White (taking this back to 2008)
  • Ahmed Best and the kid who played young Anakin being harassed by Star Wars fans after the Phantom Menace came out, taking us back to 1999. You could argue that these two weren't about the character's actions but rather the quality of the performances/product so its a bit difference but its still the same overall problem.
  • I just happened to get curious about what TV Tropes had to say about All in the Family because my roomate was watching it. By weird coincidence, because I had commented about the first three when this news was posted in a discord server already, I learned it goes back to the 70s because an actor who appears in one episode and does something incredibly evil got hate mail over it. So yeah, this shit has been going on forever

But like. WHAT the fuck is going on with that. What is going on in brains that can't separate actor from character? Is it just needing an outlet.

I think there's some discussion to be had about this shit getting worse because of increased atomization, COVID, social media giving people easy access to celebrities, and a more media obsessed population in general. But it apparently goes all the way back to All in the Family so what is going on?

And I don't think that its a minor problem either! Ahmed Best and the small child that played Anakin have shared some pretty harrowing stuff. And like, this was a reality show but I've discussed before how upset the story of Hana Kimura is to me as a fan (if you look her up, suicide cw).

My best guess is that people with very little emotional intelligence have emotions over the media they consume and need to let it out on someone as an outlet? Combined with just, poor education leading to poor media literacy?

But yeah this has always confused me lmao. I truly wish to understand the confusing actions of humans.
