A bunch of sectarian killings, with no all context scrubbed out of place. Directed by Alan Clarke, whose output is mostly in television, but more famously produced by Danny Boyle, who may have incorporated this film’s cold documentary realistic style of this documentary into 28 Days Later (2002)

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Riders of Justice (2020), an action-comedy about a group of Danish dudes who become convinced that a train crash was the fault of some secret bad guys, and they go on a roaring rampage of revenge together. Unfortunately for them, they are new to this whole action-hero thing, and make many bumbling errors along the way. What if living out your own action-movie fantasy was a form of therapy? This movie aims to show just that. This is the best-known and best-regarded work of director Anders Thomas Jensen to date.

After that is The Princess Diaries (2001), the story of a frumpy teenage girl (Anne Hathaway) who unexpectedly finds herself the heir to a fictional European monarchy, and her subsequent training to become the perfect class enemy. Will she succeed, or will she go back to being a normal girl? The suspense is killing me. Director Garry Marshall is better known for the Julia Roberts vehicle Pretty Woman (1990). Letterboxd loves this movie, so let’s give it a whirl.

Series description: Once Upon a Time... Life teaches about the human body and its various systems using the same characters from the other Once Upon a Time... seasons. The "good guys" (such as Pierrot and Mercedes from Space) represent the cells of the body's defense mechanisms, and the "bad guys" (including the "red-nose guys" as one of our regulars calls them) represent the viruses and bacteria.

We'll be watching the English dub, which this time around has pretty decent audio mixing, though we curiously can't figure out who the heck actually did the voices. They've got British accents if nothing else... Well, some of the characters seem to have South African accents, too...? It's peculiar.

Content warnings

If you've got like trypophobia or don't like looking at landscapes made of cartoon human flesh, then this show might be a problem for you. Children get serious illnesses; a character dies of old age at some point I believe; there is some nudity in the opening; the immune system is presented as cops; and some cells are very occasionally presented as caricatures of e.g. "cowboys and Indians".

Bishoujo Kamen Poitrine is a comedy series in the same vein as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon that was also an inspiration for Sailor Moon: a girl visits a shrine and is given the power to become a superheroine to protect her neighborhood.

I was absent the last two nights, but things are back to normal now; I will be there tonight. For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is I Vitelloni (1953), a comedic farce from one of the most renowned directors of all time, Federico Fellini, whose Amarcord (1973) we previously watched. The title translates to “Slackers” or “Layabouts”, since it centers around five young men in a small Italian village who want to do anything but put their nose to the grindstone as they get up to various mischievous schemes, including philandering, practical jokes, and childish games. This is considered one of Fellini’s best, and one of the best Italian films of the 1950s, so let’s give it a whirl.

After that is Tombstone (1993), a western recounting the events of the 1881 shootout at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. Kurt Russell stars as Wyatt Earp, alongside Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, and Bill Paxton, as they proceed to bring down the arm of the law on a band of bad guys haunting the town. Dudes are gonna rock. Director is George P. Cosmatos, the guy behind, uhh, Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) and Cobra (1986). This is by far his best-regarded film, and was a box-office hit.

BONUS: Comrade @CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net will be showing Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1957) after the two films above. A knight plays chess with Death. It’s considered one of the all-time classics of cinema.
