Total Trust is an eye-opening and deeply disturbing story of surveillance technology, abuse of power and (self-)censorship that confronts us with what can happen when our privacy is ignored. Through the haunting stories of people in China who have been monitored, intimidated and even tortured, the film tells of the dangers of technology in the hands of unbridled power. Taking China as a mirror, Total Trust sounds an alarm about the increasing use of surveillance tools around the world – even by democratic governments like those in Europe.

If this is the present, what is our future?

Whether Corona, the treatment of refugees or personalities like Trump, Orbán, Putin or Lukashenko - politics in Europe is under pressure. How representative and, above all, stable are our democratic processes in the face of these challenges? Where is there a need for action? Is democracy potentially becoming more "democratic" thanks to the internet and social media, as it is more participatory - or is the opposite more likely to be the case?

Some people in my country of the Netherlands seem to think that all Dutch media is bad and most Dutch people consume mostly American media. I want them to give Dutch media a chance and to give global media a chance.

I have a special interest in languages and cultures and I wouldn't have had it if I didn't start looking for music outside of the global core. I enjoy watching Bollywood, and wouldn't have done that if I didn't look past Hollywood. Consuming non-American media opens your eyes for a so much good media that you wouldn't have consumed otherwise. It gives you a different perspective on humanity as well and shows you humanity is more than just the global core. For some liberals it could lead to less prejudice and racism.

There's also so much imperialist and capitalist propaganda in American media and consuming global media lets you escape that. Global media can also show you more anti-imperialist and socialist sentiment, especially if you consume media from socialist countries. This is also why I want liberals to consume global media, so they don't fall for propaganda.

Here's a list of some of my favorite Musicians, Movies and TV-shows outside of USA:

First music:

Koza Mostra: Greek Ska Folk

Doe Maar: Dutch Ska

De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig: Dutch Hiphop

Stromae: Belgian French pop

Kadim al-Sahir: Iraqi Arabic poetic singer

Fairouz: Lebanese ballad singer

Otava Yo: Russian folk band

Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble: North Korean pop

Movies:

Er Ist Wieder Da: great German movie about how fascism can return illustrated by Hitler returning.

De Marathon: Dutch comedy

Lagaan: Indian cricket movie set in British Raj with an anti-colonialist theme

Festen: Danish drama movie about family affairs

Dil Se: Indian movie through the eyes of a stalker

Cidade de Deus: Brazilian crime thriller about the Cidade de Deus favela. The actors are locals from the actual favela.

TV Shows:

Trailer Park Boys: Canadian mockumentary comedy. I count this because this show is distincly Canadian and not wannabe American. There needs to be more focus on Anglosphere media outside the USA anyway.

Farouk Omar: Great Arab drama show based on the life of Omar Ibn al-Khattab. This show is so detailed that it taught me a lot about early Islamic history.

We would pick a book by suggesting & voting in the comments section. Then we read about 10 pages a day and discuss what we read.

Some guardrails:

  • Literature or mythology, no politics or philosophy (that's better suited for other groups; this is a cultural group)

  • Under 200,000 words.

  • Follows the main rule of this comm

  • Short stories are ok 👌

  • Available on the web so we can all access it

  • Has to be a classic, which I will leave undefined cause shure you know yourself

I thought of this rare little sub when watching this. It's difficult to evaluate how much Yank (and western) culture have contaminated our expectation and knowledge of other cultures. This video explores some of that..

And, ..going slightly OT on my own post, when trying to search for African music, the result contains mostly African 'beyonce-like' music. I have to add 'root' or similar to find something that actually sounds 'original', local and non-yank. A bit sad.

I 🇨🇦 went to see this movie last night with my girlfriend 🇨🇳. I'm pretty sure I was the only white guy in the theatre 😅

It's got an interesting tone, swinging between really funny and really serious very quickly. Sometimes you'll be raucously laughing at some goofy humour one second, and then something dark and heavy will happen and give you whiplash. In that sense, it felt a bit like a Wes Anderson film to me.

The main source of comedy in the movie comes from the dynamic between the protagonist, his wife, and his coworker/ex-girlfriend. The wife plays up the "nagging wife" trope pretty perfectly, and contrasts the diligent coworker. At times it can be hard to tell if you're supposed to believe that the protagonist is a bumbling fool, or a competent investigator. In that sense, the comedy bits reminded me a lot of Steve Martin in the Pink Panther.

The theme is interesting. It examines what the punishment should be for people who use what could be called "excessive force" in self defense. A bit high-minded at times and the ending felt a bit cheesy, but overall I liked he way the movie's core theme was repeated across many different subplots.

Overall I think it's worth watching if you like comedy/drama.

  • IMDB – https://www.imdb.com/title/tt16565742 – Follows the story of underground workers who risked their lives to send intelligence and defend the motherland, set after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor when the Wang Jingwei regime declared war on Britain and the U.S. On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The following day, the Wang False Government followed Japan's declaration of war against Britain and the United States, and Japan symbolically occupied all of Shanghai. With the outbreak of the Pacific War, the situation of China's war effort changed completely. Members of the Chinese Communist Party underground risked sending out information to break the peace between Japan and Chiang and to defend the motherland.

SpoilerIn this particular scene, we are introduced to Princess Devasena from the Kuntala kingdom. Amarendra Baahubali, the main character in the backstory, is captivated by her boldness and beauty.

Perhaps this is the first time I've seen a good introduction of a female lead in the limited movies I've seen, and for some reason, this scene has me captivated even to this day. I should also give praise to MM Keeravani for coming up with such a nice background music.

This is the near future. Gene-editing technology has developed rapidly. A scientific life form called "humanoid" has been created. The physiological structure of humanoids is almost the same as that of humans. The only difference is that the neurons in their brains have been gene-edited in a certain way. They have a sole initial obsession that must be obeyed. They can be loyal spouses until the end of their life. They can be meek and filial children. They can be employees loyal to their boss. These custom-made humanoids started to circulate as commercial goods in the worldwide. Even in some countries where production and selling of humanoids are illegal, there are still outlaws who bring humanoids into their country without permission and sell them secretly. Along with the wide spread of humanoids, their risks gradually emerge. More and more people started to be addicted to the fake emotions provided by humanoids. And for humanoids themselves, their thoughts and emotions are easily deformed under the restriction of the initial obsession. Many malignant incidents happened due to that. In the face of the more and more serious situation, the international society quickly held a meeting. The production ban and recall of humanoids were approved unanimously. According to the agreement, all nations will stop producing humanoids immediately. They should also recall and centrally manage all the humanoids in their country.

This fantasy adventure series is set in the 7th Century and follows the lives of the occupants of the Carpathian basin, at the time before the union of Slav tribes.

The Slavs, the most expensive Slovak TV series to date, is described as a “fictional reconstruction of a historical period with fantastic and supernatural elements”, inspired by Slovak and Ukrainian myths and fairy tales.
