The sexist assholes were driving away women, so the separate league was to allow women to compete without (or with less) hostility.

I just don't understand this shit but it seems to happen with all sorts of games: Why the fuck do people care what gender players have? Like, why!? Just play the game and stop worrying about other people. Damn.

It isn't a game specific issue. It is a general social problem that is easier to observe in sports because of the historical exclusion of women from most high profile sports.

Woman are allowed to participate in the open league, but there is also a seperate woman-only league
