On the DVD commentary of Stanley Kubrick's "Spartacus" (1960), the screenwriter laments during one scene that Americans sometimes don't understand the difference between an actor and the character they play, and then further laments that America elected a "second rate actor" as president (referring to Reagan).
I'll see if I can find the video.
