She shouldn’t have needed to be a perfect candidate to beat an authoritarian, untrustworthy, unethical, unhinged, and convicted felon candidate.

She wasn't. She was a horrible person, with a horrible record and a horrible immediately recent legacy.
Even if they chose ThePerfectCandidate, with immaculate record: if said candidate defended the previous administration and campaigned on not changing anything except pivoting to the right even more, doubling down on it over and over, not even willing to lie and tell the voters what they would like to hear; they would have eaten this same amount of shit.
Are they in some kind of denial that they legitimately lost?

Yes they are. A number of them have been hanging on to the conspiracy that Elon musk rigged it in trumps favor.
