For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Short Cuts (1993), based on the novel by Raymond Carver and directed by renowned auteur Robert Altman, whose films 3 Women (1977), The Last Goodbye (1973), Nashville (1975), and Popeye (1980) we have previously watched. It is a multi-narrative drama-black-comedy that follows numerous groups of characters in the hellish world of Usian suburbia, including stories revolving around car crashes, infidelity, hospital visits, and birthday cakes, among others. All of the stories are united Altman and Carver’s satirical-Americana aesthetic. This is one of the most critically-acclaimed films of the 1990s, so let’s check it out.

After that is Princes and Princesses (2000), a French stop-motion-animated fairy tale done entirely with silhouetted paper cutouts, in an homage to the silent classic The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), which we previously watched. It is an anthology of six stories, all featuring princes and princesses, as the title suggests. Looks pretty neat. Director Michel Ocelot is best-known for the African-mythology-themed animation Kirikou and the Sorceress (1998), which we previously watched.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
