Bruh what? They're citing lack of staff? They haven't even asked for volunteers! I would be happy to help!

[–] AnyOldName3@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago (3 children)

You don't necessarily want to just ask for volunteers as that's a great way to summon exactly the kind of people you don't want to put in charge of online communities. The best way is usually to notice people who are already part of the community and consistently make positive contributions, then ask for their help. If none of those people want to, though, you're stuck.

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

As somebody that created and moderated communities for almost 20 years you nailed it.

Nobody should actively want to be a moderator, it's a hell job.

Flashback to when the creator of lemmy.world/c/the_pack was looking for mods. I volunteered with

I’m also a shitty mod and will disappear for weeks at a time. I only have experience modding a small subreddit and have no familiarity with Lemmy’s mod tools. Feel free to hit me up.

I passed the vibe check and now I'm exactly as crap a mod as I said I'd be.

[–] barsoap@lemm.ee 6 points 1 week ago

Better many lazy mods with proper vibes than one eager mod with a chip on their shoulder.

I wouldn't mind going through reports etc. either, I can take off some load, but don't make it a responsibility.

Obviously you would vet each person, not just blindly give admin privileges.

Yeah, I got close to volunteering, too, but honestly, my plate is too full doing more important stuff in the real world atm.

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

So it's everyone else's. That's why we're at the point we're at. Sucks, but my plate is too full too.

[–] Rin@lemm.ee 8 points 1 week ago

fuck, i didn't see it... D:

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 week ago

They did, 4 month ago

[–] Xanza@lemm.ee 9 points 1 week ago

The people that are most willing to help are generally the least likely to help, especially when it comes to content moderation.

(my local version of the recruitment thread, in case the original lemm.ee post link becomes inaccessible)

[–] Rin@lemm.ee 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Honestly, me too. I wouldn't mind taking on some /c/, but I've got a bad moderation record (banned in places, removed comments in others......) but I can be better and can take this place with sincerity rather than a place to vent my autistic annoyances in the worst ways possible. I've been here for 2 years and I wouldn't want this - what we have - to go away.

Can we please have a post where /c/ that are struggling to moderate could ask for help? Hell, we could even do it monthly or every 2 months. Just gather ever /c/ that is struggling and ask for vols.

If you're gonna volunteer to be a moderator or admin for your instance you probably should brush up on its philosophy regarding other instances first.

[–] Rin@lemm.ee 0 points 1 week ago (2 children)

holy jesus... is that..? the user i triggered earlier? bruh... is that what you do to everyone? stalk them?

regardless, ee doesn't defed and I don't share the same opinion in one case about one instance. it's almost as if people can have differing opinions. crazy world

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You can have a differing opinion, but I don't know how far you're gonna get in becoming an admin when you fundamentally differ on the philosophy of the instance. Hell, that's probably a very valid reason why your admins weren't letting random users apply to become admins, because it seems a lot of people don't get it.

[–] Googledotcom@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

You are from Hexbear what are you even doing here? This is nothing of any interest or involvement with you

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Another user who signed up in the instance that is specifically supposed to federate with all other instances and only defederate as a last resort who... really doesn't like being federated with other instances? I'm trying to be respectful here, literally just reminding you of why your instance exists and how your admins think.

[–] Googledotcom@lemm.ee -2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Another troll from Hexbear meddling into things that are none of their business. This is a meta community involving events of this server.

You are a guest here so behave like a guest.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you are from another instance, you may participate in discussions, but remain respectful. Realize that your comments will inevitably be associated with your instance by many lemm.ee users.

says right there on the sidebar that we are explicitly allowed to comment here. I'm sorry you feel that I'm a troll for citing your admin's post explaining the instance's philosophy shrug-outta-hecks

[–] Rin@lemm.ee -3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you don’t have anything constructive to add, then do not post/comment here

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago

I did have something constructive to add, though, I'm explaining your instance's philosophy because I see some revisionism in the community.
