It’s called critical support. I can support both Iran’s self-defense from genocidal maniacs while simultaneously criticizing them for their human rights abuses. It’s something that people with a functioning brain can do - hold two ideas in their head at once.

Besides, Israel has killed more gay people in the last year just through sheer numbers of the people they’ve exterminated than Iran has ever.

There's a difference between carpet bombing an entire country (also not defensible) and deliberately removing gay people from your population using the legal system.

How many gay people do you think the occupation regime of west Palestine has killed in their genocide?

[–] Scott_of_the_Arctic@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Clearly many more. I'm not defending Israel at all. They're clearly war criminals. However they don't execute LGBT people in their own country which is the point of the meme. Iran is specifically trying to irradiate LGBTQ people in their own country. Iran is a theocratic dictatorship and is incapable of being the "good guy" with the current regime.

[–] mathemachristian@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

They do execute lgbt people though. And children and pregnant women, they're executing an entire population. A repressive dictatorship is still better than a genocidal one.

Yes, and carpet bombing is entirely more evil. Iran is the lesser of two evils here. Isn’t that what liberals said we should always strive for? The lesser of two evils?

[–] Scott_of_the_Arctic@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Not lesser, just different. The two countries are very different and you can't really draw a sensible comparison. Additionally I would point out that Iran has been supplying weapons, money, and intelligence to Hamas and Hezbollah for years. Have Hamas been a good thing for Gaza?

But let's not forget Yemen. Vastly more people have died in the Yemeni civil war (100s of thousands of civilians) which was started by the houthis, who are an Iranian proxy. They also propped up Bashar al Assad, who used chemical weapons against the Syrian population. They also had a hand in the Sudanese civil war.

So yeah Iran hasn't directly been involved in genocide, but they've been encouraging and funding it for a good while. Not good guys.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Your last paragraph is really out there, making Israel worse because they may have accidentally killed more gays?

How about we don't cheer on either? How about we don't cheer at all? Innocent civilians are dying because a bunch of dictatorial egomaniacs want to feel powerful. I don't care what their nationality is, people are dying, I'm not cheering anyone.

Fuck the Israeli genocidal government

Fuck the Iranian murderous hateful theocratic dictatorship

Fuck the murderers from Hamas.

Take all of those against a wall and you finally might have a chance at actual peace there.

I'm not cheering, I'm crying for the people

[–] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

How is it accidental? They are committing genocide. All of their murders are purposeful. Also, I never said anything about cheering, I said I critically support Iran's defense against Israeli aggression.

Btw, I agree with you. The ruling class is responsible for all of this, and unless we remove them and make it impossible for a class system to exist, we will perpetually have war.

All I'm saying is that if someone attacks me, intent on my annihilation, you don't get to say how I fight back.

something people with a functional brain

Okay but this is the internet, and im going to do strong readings of everything and also youre supposed to have all the same mental illness and knowledge as me.

[–] Liberteez@lemm.ee -2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, functioning brains can experience cognitive dissonance

[–] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

It’s not cognitive dissonance if you’re deliberately holding the two ideas. It’s only cognitive dissonance when you try to keep their black and white thinking and can’t find any reconciliation between the two.
