That's just it - he wasn't!

The Gunslinger (genuinely one of the greatest books I've ever read) was written on mountains of cocaine.

He was clean for the Dark Tower sequels

Cujo was written on so much coke that king doesn't even remember writing it. The only book of his that really never did it for me.

Cujo was played by four St. Bernards, several mechanical dogs, and a black Labrador–Great Dane mix in a St. Bernard costume. In some shots, stuntman Gary Morgan played Cujo while wearing a large dog costume.
