It's a product of META , Facebook's greasy overlord. Essentially its a separate app from Instagram but it compliments Instagram. It is Facebook's attempt to siphon users from Twitter. Also Threads accounts cannot be deleted only deactivated at the moment.

Ahh, so not really a threat to Lemmy then? Like they aren't really trying to be the same thing...

No from what what I've read its focused on a text limit like Twitter is.
