A race that has cast off their mortal shell and has become a self sustaining machine collective or semi emotionally capable androids. Or crab people.
they keep saying everything keeps evolving into crabs for some unknown reason.

I do have a leaning towards interdimentional beings probing us along side the whole other life in this plane. It would explain how things we see with reguards to UAP being silent, static, and moves in crazy speeds and only shows up in certain spectrums. Carl Sagan's FlatLand explaination is helpful for this perspective.
What we percieve as lines in the 1D and 2D might be what we look like to them. All this "the earth is flat" crap might be soft disclosure from the perspective of a 4 or 5 dimentional entity. When we do see their poking arounds, we only see slices of their stuff that appear to pop in and out of existsnce.
