Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

Won’t it be great when the history books recount how America held off fascism because it memed it away.

[–] spacedancer@lemmy.world 40 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Memes in a way also brought back fascism. Remember when T_D (and some parts of 4chan) started out with Trump for president as a joke?

[–] MisterMcBolt@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Hell, wasn’t Qanon just 4chan shitposting at first?

[–] deft@ttrpg.network 5 points 1 year ago

yes it was sort of part of an ama kinda joke

[–] YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] tallwookie@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

dont let your memes be dreams...

[–] Thoth19@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I remember back in 2015-16 when his prospects were such a joke. I thought to myself I hope he wins the primary bc it will completely destroy Republican chances.

Well that didn't turn out as we expected.

Look what they did to that poor frog!

[–] sciawp@lemm.ee 37 points 1 year ago

Considering that the right-wing memed Trump into office, I think it is only fitting that memes are what destroy them

[–] whatisallthis@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah I immediately thought of being in school reading about Washington crossing the Delaware and how future generations will read about dark Brandon memes.

[–] funkless@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

on the other hand, people probably felt the same about news, leaked correspondence, "yellow journalism" (fake news), crowd baiting speeches, pamphlets, flyers, and marches throughout pre-digital media.

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world -4 points 1 year ago

The DNC should release Dark Brandon NFTs to raise money. Like Trump did.

It Could Happen Here had some good coverage on how this is actually happening.

Check out the 3 part DeSantis' Fashwave Adventure episodes that just came out.

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I haven’t listened to them in a while. Thanks.

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world -5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Counterpoint, if it works that means fascism lost to memes

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It makes sense. Memes are propaganda.

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And while fascism does use humor to lure people in, it also cannot deal with being the but of a joke

[–] jtk@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 year ago

Fascist humor is just the first thing any teenage mind would think of to make their teenage friends giggle. It usually just amounts to calling someone a derogatory name. And, just like a teenager, they get pissed when it's echoed back at them. They are, literally, mentally retarded.

[–] snooggums@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I think you have that backwards.

All propaganda are memes.

Not all memes are propaganda.

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I should’ve said memes can be propaganda.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (3 children)

That's not a counterpoint, that's just repeating what they said.

So why male models?

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The original phrasing to me made it sound like the survivors should be embarrassed to have used memes to defeat fascism. When the fascist are the ones that should be embarrassed

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Oh I see it now. Thanks for the clarification!

[–] DrNeurohax@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Counterpoint - yes.
