Big brain tech dude got yet another clueless take over at HackerNews etc? Here's the place to vent. Orange site, VC foolishness, all welcome.
This is not debate club. Unless it’s amusing debate.

we’re looking for a sneerious name for a collaborative design/programming community for non-dickheads, like hacker news but not shit. thread your suggestions here!
The Margaret Hamilton Society
Just to confuse things design a logo that references both Margaret Hamilton from NASA and Margaret Hamilton the Wicked Witch actress. Maybe a woman flying on a NASA rocket-propelled bicycle, but maybe not because the slow and judgey might think that's calling NASA Hamilton a witch.
Actually referencing a non-technical woman might even help repel HN types.
the more I think about it, the more I like this one too
The MIT alum in me wants to devise some variation on "Building 20" that conveys a "but without the worse aspects of MIT subculture" kind of message.
I originally wanted "freeasinbothpieces", which sums up the idea precisely, but five words is a bit much even with camel case
That could be the hostname for the forge instance(s)
Or the backups
Six Double Oh Eww
“MIT-style culture but not run by the worst people you know” is exactly the kind of thing I’d like to convey
e: also, implicitly, without the shit bigotry hiding under the surface that those worst people imbued the culture with
"Demolishing 20"
Einstürzende Zwanzig
I'm feeling uncreative but it's a shame giggle academy is taken
"painter news" could be a nice jab at PG's "Hackers & Painters"
we don't want to mislead the actual painters
I would gladly take any number of actual painters over some of the programmers I've had to deal with contributing to open source projects
oh I've heard of that dev - apparently they really like to focus on areas with wide impact! just the sort of dev you want in your team!
has very helpful friends too
speaking of networks, I saw this yesterday and it sure gave me some feelings
"Cathedral Central"
"bikeshed painters club" comes to mind, but probably also too long
ooh i like "bikeshed painting" or variants
"bikeshed systems" maybe? nicely memorable (and matches pattern of current tld) too
hibste.rs
("runk" and "GNU/Scrotum" are right out)
GNU/Scrotum is a great name for a lemmy fork, but Richard’s copyright lawyers would probably sue me and the settlement terms would involve him eating his foot skin on my couch and leeching off of my wifi from his 2004 laptop for 12-24 months
spider plants are canonical
Name suggestion: Spider Plant Greenhouse
I do like this one
was pretty surprising when the sensible people took over at OSI and FSF got worse and worse
he’ll probably draw a significant amount of power from the fact that some of the walls in my house contain GNU utilities running on small Linux systems
Richard’s 2004 laptop runs FreeDOS but he find/replaced all instances of “FreeDOS” in the code to “GNU/Hurd”
I heard if you make minor modifications to those but then don't publish source (along with branding them and dropping license files) then he can take 20d6 psychic damage
Are you sure he limits it to his foot skin?
Play your cards right and you could put him to work like one of those fish that eat dead skin off feet as part of a pedicure.
Apropos of nothing, does Stallman still request access to a parrot? It'd be funny to find him a place to stay with a person whose parrot is trained to talk shit about Stallman. "KWOK! SHUT UP ABOUT HURD!"
runk sounds it would be the name of a rust variant of troff
Nah it’s masturbation in Swedish.
More specifically, "en runk" is analogous to "a wank", but it's not idiomatic.
wanking = "att runka"
I wanked = "jag runkade"
I had a wank = "jag tog en runk", non-idiomatic. You'd say "jag runkade". If you want to use a noun, "jag drog en tralla".
so 100% in the tradition of the area of software that thought a good name for its photoshop clone would be "gimp"
fascinating, thanks for mentioning :)
