Hello new Lemmy friends!
Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.
The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.
Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.
We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

Good for you. I think you are having trouble looking at something from a different point of view and don’t realize everyone doesn’t think the way you do. Your question has been answered and you don’t understand us. It’s perfectly fine not to understand and now you can just walk away from this place too
Huh? They answered your questions and you called them toxic for no reason. Clearly you are only here to rile up some sort of response and are upset you didn’t get it. No one owes you any kind of explanation, especially when you’re not engaging in good faith. Leave them alone.
You seem to know a lot! Can you explain to us how we are toxic? Why are we the toxic ones for feeling betrayed by someone? I’m guessing you maybe also enjoy lying and manipulating and that is why you think we should give a pass to influencers who lie and deceive, or as you said “she’s pretty” so of course the pretty rich white women should be allowed to lie and if we don’t like it we should just turn a blind eye. This is a group of intelligent people literally just having a conversation about influencers and you come in here cursing and being rude and we’re the toxic ones?
This reeks of mansplaining, Maple and you’re getting worked up because your feelings are hurt. It’s okay that you don’t understand what we are about but stop discounting it due to your ignorance.
Just block them. They don’t want to get it. Some people are so strange.
Imagine seeing a group of people meeting in public and butting in yelling “explain to me what you’re all talking about” and a few people try and explain and the person just keeps yelling nonsensical things at them that have nothing to do with the conversation and then tells the group that was just minding their own business that they’re the toxic ones?
Yea this person has no idea how to behave around strangers.
You’re right.
Not worked up. No hurt feelings. You're projecting.
I saw the posts going by in All and saw that they were incredibly toxic. I read the info and saw that it was so toxic in fact that it had been banned by Reddit which is a fetid cesspool of toxicity so it made me curious. I'm just asking questions to try to understand why you can't simply walk away. It's the members of this community that are getting worked up and their feelings hurt because someone is questioning the group think.
Questioning the group think is how this group formed. The Kool-Aid cups were set aside and people started questioning what this person is doing. Influencing is a job. The Influencer is the product and the followers are the marks. We got tired of being the marks and hope we can find a way to stop her from defrauding others. To do otherwise is being a bystander. It’s awesome that you stand in judgement and label our group toxic and believe we can’t just walk away. Of course we could walk away and just allow her to continue completely unchecked since Influencing is very close to being an unregulated industry but that would be wrong.
No I still don’t understand. We aren’t moaning and whining we’re having a discussion, there are also a few reporters in this group compiling an article. You keep putting things in quote marks like they were said to you in this group and I’m having a hard time finding when they were said to you so I’m getting a little lost. I understand if you are one of those people that sees things they don’t like and believes that everyone should just look the other way but we aren’t like that and it seems strange to come in here and chastise people for wanting to create change. I have a feeling you don’t want to see what we’re talking about though and it’s more fun and easier for you to come in here and name call and make us feel bad.
I think you're reading what's happening in this group through rose colored glasses. This community is highly toxic. It's so toxic that it was banned from Reddit. Reddit. That's toxic.
The reaction of the group when I made my first comment was very angry. I poked the hornet's nest. When I started asking questions multiple people told me to mind my own business and walk away. That's highly toxic. Protect the scho bunker at all costs and all.
I've grown borded of this discussion. I got a couple of good answers from people who were hoping that it would make me go away and stop asking questions but they then reverted to personal attacks and amateur psychoanalysis.
I'll leave you to your hate, now. Have a good day.
I’m sorry you read it that way because it wasn’t my intent. You seem to have an unconscious bias that you are being attacked in some way. I didn’t take personal offence to you proclaiming this a hate group when it is not yet you call me after I politely tell you this isn’t the place for you.
It was more than likely banned by Reddit because the influencer in question lawyered up and threatened them with legal action (the way it happened was very strange and she alluded to taking legal action against “haters” a week or two prior). She also served a reporter, Janette Ewen, with a cease and desist letter because she didn’t like being called out for her actions. Honest people with nothing to hide don’t go to such lengths to cover their tracks. Influencers are scared because they know people are starting to question them.
I also find it ironic that you’re here accusing others of telling you to leave when that’s exactly what you’re doing. We have a right to be here just like you do and if you don’t like it then why are you spending your time and energy arguing? Others have engaged with your questions meaningfully and you have only doubled down on your attacks.
