there's some freaky perspective shit going on there. They're big. but they're not economy car big.

[-] Forester@yiffit.net 29 points 2 months ago

The wingsman can easily be 8 to 9 ft if it's female

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

Look at the first picture, wings aren’t spread. The largest baldies are recorded as having 8 foot wingspans- in alaska. They tend to be smaller closer to the equator.

For comparison, if that’s a Hyundai Elantra behind it, it’s 15 feet long. (Close enough for 4 doors whatever it is.)

From what I can see : The car is down slope and probably 35 ft away. The eagle is on the slope and probably 15 ft away. It has an 8 to 9-ft wingspan roughly.

I've had one of these land on my boat before so I'm familiar with raptor sizes from the Mid-Atlantic East Coast, USA.

yes. it's forced perspective. which is what I alluded to by saying "some freaky perspective shit going on"

not saying the bird is actually ginormous. just that it looks ginormous. they're big birds. Big, dumb birds. (I agree with with Franklin. turkeys > bald eagles. also there's something hilarious about them trying to get crab apples

[-] SwampYankee@mander.xyz 4 points 2 months ago

Can I subscribe to Mid-Atlantic Raptor Facts?

[-] groet@feddit.de 18 points 2 months ago

Yeah the bird is on a flat roof maybe a garage or something similar on the same height or slightly below the window

[-] Forester@yiffit.net 11 points 2 months ago

Brother, the eagle is standing on grass

Grass roofs are amazing.

[-] xpinchx@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

Yeah whatever surface it's on, it's slightly elevated. It's a big bird but there's some optical illusion going on.

Need banana for scale

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Moped big at most, since we're measuring in vehicles.

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

E-bike is the best I can do.

Cue red tailed hawk screaming in the distance

[-] Alteon@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago

Please correct me if I'm wrong.....but I'm fairly certain that's a vulture.

[-] geogle@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago

Seems like an eagle to me. At least in North America, Bald eagles can be considerably larger than vultures. Oh and baldies are also carrion eaters.

[-] marcos@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Does the US have unusually small vultures? Mexican vultures are famous, and much larger than a bald eagle, but even here in Brazil our vultures are about the size of a bald eagle.

Condors are Superman.

[-] DoctorWhookah@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

I think so too. The pic on the left its easier to see its head.

[-] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 19 points 2 months ago

Thought the title said "Magafauna", which also works

[-] drcobaltjedi@programming.dev 32 points 2 months ago

Well, no, not really. Back during the 2016 election don poorleon did a photoshoot with a bald eagle and the bird attacked him. I still love the pure symbolism there, the symbol of American democracy considered him a threat.

"Get that tiny hand away from me!"

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Was that before or after the Birdie incident?

Omg - just looked up eagle wingspan and it's wider than the height of any human I've ever met

[-] Bloobish@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

I wanna pet it and feed it canned clam bits
