So nice I had to use it twice!

This Iberia looks fantastic. How did it compare to its Fili cousin?

I love my Fili, but if I had to choose, I'd pick this Iberia. It feels great. The steel has that unique Swedish feel. Super super light and gentle feeling.

I've been looking at pallets Palmera and Iberia 14s on eBay for a while.

One day in the not to distant future, I'll have to try one too.

Yours is new old stock, right?

One day in the not to distant future, I’ll have to try one too.

I hope you do! I'd be curious to see if I'm just blindly in love, or if it really does feel as good as I think it does.

It is

That Iberia looks incredible!! What a great find! Doble Temple means tempered twice. Do you know anything about that procedure?

Thank you! I'm super happy with it.

I did know that it means double temper, but no, I'm not familiar with the process. Do tell!

I'm not familiar with it either. The Fili double tempered steel is excellent. I bet the procedure is called something else today. I owe Tim Zowada an email. I'll ask.

Please let me know when you find that Iberia's twin! :)

Oh I'm sure Tim will have a good explanation. I'll be curious to hear it. Maybe it is about time I start educating myself more on the metallurgy aspect.

And yes, I certainly will!

Shave 1 of 2

May 8, 2024

  • Brush: AP Shave Co. - 24mm Synbad Fan
  • Razor: Wolfman Guerilla (Gen 1)
  • Blade: Personna Lab Blue (6)
  • Lather: Maurer & Wirtz - Tabac - Soap
  • Post Shave: Chatillon Lux - Delor de Treget - Aftershave

Wife let me sleep in a little bit, so by the time I woke up and had to drive her to a medical appointment I didn't really have time to shave. I decided to do a 1 pass ATG shave, and it worked ok. Not the results I'm used to, but better than nothing.

Shave 2 of 2

May 8, 2024

  • Brush: AP Shave Co. - 24mm Synbad Fan
  • Razor: Wolfman Guerilla (Gen 1)
  • Blade: Personna Lab Blue (7)
  • Lather: Palmolive - Sensitive - Cream
  • Post Shave: Aqua Velva - Musk - After Shave Cologne
  • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm

After my one pass shave this morning, I figured I'd do it right now that I had some more time. I'm glad I did. Life is too short for not-all-that-close shaves!

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

Ok. We'll be seeing you in BBS November :)

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

You'll be seeing me, but only once per day!

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

I admit that making time for that second shave can sometimes be a challenge :)

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

@djundjila recommended this combination of soap, aftershave and fragrance, and I've tried it once before. This setup is (surprisingly) a real winner! I really like the progression of scent notes. I'll be using this regularly from now on.

The shave, itself, was extremely close and comfortable. This is not my Red Imp razor. It belongs to u/VisceralWatch. My own Red Imp has a synthetic edge on it. I put a Jnat edge on this one and I definitely like the Jnat softness better. Here's the video if you're interested.

Jnat edges++

I don't know that I could ever go back to synthetic. I have been considering picking up some Arks, though, to learn more about them. I've only ever had a couple Ark edges and I did not enjoy them. However, it doesn't seem that very many folks are as meticulous as us.

it doesn’t seem that very many folks are as meticulous as us.

And there's the rub. The Black Ark is used in different ways. Some people burnish the surface to round/smooth the novaculite there. Some use a flattening plate (or SiC powder) on the surface to create surface texture. I'm in the second camp. In neither case does the stone remove much material from a razor. Mostly, its scratch pattern creates a texture on the apex just like other finishing stones do. The Ark texture is finer than a coticule and not as even as the texture from a synthetic. To me, its feel is somewhere between a synthetic and a coticule. I haven't done this, but I've been told that if you really push the edge on an Ark its appearance under the scope will be bad, but the feel will be amazing. I haven't tried this yet, but I think that the edge will be quite fragile.

My friend, you probably just saved me some money 🤣

Oh, I don't know. The slate stones are fun. The Black Shadow edge that I have on my TI is quite nice, and the stone, itself, has a wonderful feel. I want to try a La Lune (which I think will be the same), and a Thuringian.

I've always been curious about La Lune's myself. I don't know that I've tried an edge off one, and general sentiment seems to be pretty positive

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

I think that the Black Shadow and La Lune stones are both microcrystalline quartz. I can say that, so far, I like the edge off of my Black Shadow better than the two edges I have from my Black Ark. But ... different razor types and different steels are involved.
