same thing with lemmy clients, manually clicking through 100 check boxes of supported domains... can't the app ask to do it on first launch? or is my setup to blame?

Try using LinkSheet: https://github.com/1fexd/LinkSheet.

You set it as your system default browser and then it'll replace Android's deep linking system. It has a select all button for domains, too.

Unfortunately I don't think stock android has a select all option. For lemmy, there's a lemmy redirect app (https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/dev.zwander.lemmyredirect/) that can use Shizuku or LinkSheet to enable all the supported domains for you.

I use LinkSheet. I've also seen some apps use [Shizuku API](https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/moe.shizuku.privileged.api] to do this for the user.
