but workers still insist on checking receipts

yeah it's those overzealous retail workers just insisting on checking receipts.

anyway, the sun is a murdoch rag and this seems more like dunk tank material than technology. please delete and repost there.

they can't stop you from just walking by them out the door

I do it all the time. I've only had one person try and stop me.

kirby-jammin also wearing extra bigass earhole covers, couldn't hear them

The one guy tried to step in front of me while I was carrying out a single large item.

Honestly lol. They usually hire chomsky-yes-honey to do receipt checks. Also, most of the security staff that watches the cameras usually go home after 5 PM, at least when I worked there.

I researched this a long time ago, and I found one case where someone walked past the receipt checker and kept walking when they told them to stop. Security grabbed them and held them until the police came and figured out they didn't steal anything. They sued for false arrest, arguing that under that states shopkeeper privilege statute, the store needs some suspicion that you stole before stopping you. The judge dismissed the suit, reasoning that not wanting to show your receipt was sufficient suspicion of theft.

Not all states have the same shopkeepers privilege, and the not all judges would use that bs reasoning, but it's not worth the hassle to me to ignore them anymore. Plus I don't want to hassle the person checking receipts. They're usually people who, if they lived in a fair society, would be retired.

Yeah, security can hold you, but 99.99% of stores tell their regular employees to never stop someone, even if they think they're stealing. They can get sued for false imprisonment and/or assault so easily.

Security generally has the privilege to stop you if they suspect you're stealing. Generally though they won't call the cops unless they've got some sort of proof.

My favorite part about checking out is when Iโ€™m trying to double check my scanned items, and the machine locks because Iโ€™m not moving for 3 seconds and I have to wait 3 minutes for someone to come by and unlock it

Me constantly setting off the "possible theft" detector because I'm putting my bag on the side of the machine where I'm about to put my groceries.

I will never give up my employee discount at self checkout
